RETRO REVIVAL

PERENNIALLY COOL MID-CENTURY DESIGN GETS AN EXTRA HIT OF COLOUR WITH A LOOK THAT MAKES A BOLD STATEMENT

Express your creative side with our Retro Revival trend. Drawing on the mid-century modern style of the 1950s and the achingly cool 1970s, this look is sleek and sophisticated, yet incorporates a bold use of colour. ‘Retro Revival has so much confidence,’ says Fionnuala Johnston, Partner & Senior Designer, Home Design Studio. ‘For me, it’s a great furniture and lighting story with some, dare I say, “icons of the future” to choose from.’

Fionnuala advises starting with neutral walls: ‘That way, the strong furniture shapes and colours will really pop. Try vibrant vermilion orange, rich plum tones or bold teal. This look can take three or more colours in one space because of the richness of each colour in the collection.’

Polished silver and high-shine finishes will also give a lustrous feel, while dark woods, cut velvet and art deco geometrics add depth. ‘You don’t need much pattern to pull this look off,’ says Fionnuala. ‘One really strong pattern can supply a colour palette. I love the geometric jacquards that are in this collection.’ Fionnuala’s stand-out piece is the Boutique Upholstered Bed which is available in ‘stunning teal or blue’.

‘You can get this look with a statement pattern, light or piece of furniture,’ says Fionnuala. ‘Then by working these in with existing pieces, such as mid-century finds, you can have a little retro fun.’
