Nick Mosley, Assistant Buyer, Men’s Branded Casualwear picks his standout pieces from our international denim authorities

It's in the Jeans

Chances are, from a very early age, your wardrobe has featured more denim than any other item of clothing. Why? It's infinitely versatile and has pretty much underpinned every cultural movement for generations.

Consider your own denim evolution. Ditching, say, the wide leg jeans from your formative years for a slimmer fit wasn't based soley on cut. Your jeans speak volumes about your identity without uttering a word. Now that's a powerful piece of clothing.

Cut, colour and construction are key to giving the right impression. That's why we've enlisted four contemporary labels, each showcasing the creme de la creme of their nation's denim. So, be it Japanese selvedge or American heritage, remember: the devil's in the denim.

Edwin embodies all that's great about Japanese menswear: an obsession over, and delivery of, outstanding product qualities.

The Japanese denim used by Edwin is rightly hailed as best in class. Their trademark 'W' batwing is embroidered on to the back pockets of every jean and present throughout the range - truly unique branding

"The superior quality of red-listed selvedge on the brand's indigo jean is woven exclusively in Japan for Edwin, elevating the brand's renowned ED80 Slim Tapered fit"

Hawksmill Denim Co. was set up by ex-Nudie Jeans director Fraser Trewick in a bid to be the leading British Denim brand.

Each product is designed with painstaking attention to detail, using the best authentic manufacturing techniques, design details and materials available in the industry. Treated right their products could last you a lifetime

"Hawksmill's mid-blue wash is a key trend to come - easy to wear and lifts any look. The brand's Organic Cotton Slim Tapered Jeans are designed in Britain but made from Organic Cone Mills denim - the last remaining denim mill in the United States"

DENHAM was founded in Amsterdam in 2008 by Jason Denham, an English jeanmaker who’s obsessed with creating premium quality denim.

Know for their attention to detail (the brand's scissor logo comprises 691 stiches and is present on every item of their clothing), they continually pioneer new and innovative washes

"Featuring the label's scissor motif in a sophisticated denim graphic, this t-shirt epitomises Denham's design-focused approach to denim"

Levi's Made and Crafted takes Levi's know-how of the American denim industry to a new level, amplifying the range with bold designs and superior fabrications.

Their AW17 range is heavily influenced by Scandinavian design, continuing the brand's reputation for synthesising core denim with the best new design trends

"The brand's 'rip and repair' jeans epitomise the trend for distressed jeans in a way that still delivers functionality. Denim patches 'repair' the rips, creating an artful lived-in feel to the jeans, rather than accentuating as ripped jeans often do"
