Brand Story

Erika Knight is a major name in the fashion and yarn industries, praised as an expert knitwear designer and consultant. Hailing from a fine art background with an ethos of eco-design and minimalism, Erika Knight’s unique style is evident in every one of her ventures.
In collaboration with John Lewis, Erika Knight creates an exclusive new range of patterns and yarns showcasing her passion for British made material. Accompanied by an extensive cost to knit guide, the knitting process is finally effortless.

"Since launching my own eponymous handknit yarn label in 2012 I have been determined to support British manufacturing and to promote sustainable, natural fibres. Having been involved in the textile industry for many years and in different guises, I have witnessed at first hand the decline and subsequent reemergence of British hand knitting. It is with this experience, insight and passion that I have designed a collection of yarns and patterns in collaboration with John Lewis.

Knitting began as a hobby for me when I was a student studying Fine Art in the era of punk fashion, when it didn’t matter if you had a ladder in your sweater and any holes could be fixed together with safety pins! I would knit for friends and soon realised that I could sell my makes, but I really had no intention of becoming a knitwear designer. However, opportunities arose and armed with little more than enthusiasm and passion for design I had soon launched my own handknit label ‘Molto!’, selling readymade garments to global high-end retailers.

Since then I have designed knitwear for many high street and designer brands in the UK, Italy, USA and Australia and worked to challenging briefs including designing the parade wear for the British Olympic team for the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010. The challenge being creating a flattering design for athletes with vastly different body shapes – from male ice hockey players to petite female figure skaters!

Having written over 25 books on knit and crochet I have learnt the importance of writing patterns that are easy to understand and interpret and with enticing projects that will inspire someone to take the valuable time to make something by hand.

My ambition for the erika knight for John Lewis brand was to create a yarn that would be pleasurable to knit with, and create beautiful garments. Made entirely in Britain by a heritage mill in Yorkshire the erika knight for John Lewis yarns are all 100% pure wool with a concise and covetable colour palette.

With photographs by Yuki Sugiura the patterns adhere to a ready-to-wear look, whilst maintaining a simplicity and ease of instruction. Above all I think it is important that the projects are accessible to inspire the beginner knitter to experiment, then to build confidence in the craft to really enjoy the process of creating something with your hands.

I love the dedication and passion that crafters have and I think now more than ever it is a valuable experience to teach people to take the time to create their own ‘slow clothes’, as well as to respect the natural world and sustain its resources."
