Why we're backing British

We know that you want to make informed decisions about what you buy, and that you're interested in the provenance and sustainability of products. Local sourcing plays a part in that, and as a British retailer, we're proud to support British design and quality.

John Lewis is working with more than 130 UK manufacturers in celebration of the nation's skills and craftsmanship, and we'll be marking thousands of home-grown products with this Union Jack flag logo to help you see which items are "Made in UK", whether you're browsing here on the website or visiting our shops. Here are just a few examples of products to look out for:

Herbert Parkinson textiles and weaving mill

Our exclusive textile manufacturing company was founded in Lancashire in 1934 and is one of the last remaining weaving mills in this country. It designs and makes around 600,000 metres of John Lewis furnishing fabric every year - find out more in this video. It produces our natural-filled duvets and pillows too - watch this video.

Our Partners at the mill will also make beautiful curtains and blinds to order for you, and deliver them in just 7 days - find out more about this service.

John Lewis Fitted Bedroom & Office furniture

We've worked with one of the leading UK manufacturers of fitted furniture to develop the John Lewis bedroom and home office ranges. Everything is made to measure in UK factories, then delivered and installed in your home, so we can custom-make solutions for every corner and awkward space.

John Lewis mattresses and divan bases are made to our own specifications in UK factories that between them have over 300 years' experience in making beds. We've selected companies that continue to use traditional, time-honoured skills, passed down from generation to generation, coupled with the latest technology to create fantastic, comfortable beds that are a lasting testimony to British craftsmanship.

Because we continue to have the majority of our mattresses made in the UK, these can also be specially made to meet your exact requirements, using the finest natural materials, many of which are UK-sourced. Watch these videos about bed materials and the craftsmanship employed in manufacture.

Arthur Price cutlery

Epitomising the very best in English design and craftsmanship, Arthur Price is a family company that's been making cutlery for over 100 years, and we stock several of their ranges including Rivelin, a collaboration with Sophie Conran.

True Grace home fragrances

Philippa and Roger Biles aim to capture an essence of England in their range of fragranced home products, which are elegantly packaged to make beautiful gifts. They believe that perfume is strongly associated with memory and emotion, and that a particular scent can transport you anywhere; from a place in the country to recollections of your childhood.

True Grace is committed to local and sustainable production. Making everything in their workshop in Wiltshire, they use only the finest ingredients. These range from a specially created blend of 100% natural plant wax for their fragranced candles, to organically-grown wheat alcohol used in their Home Scent.

John Lewis Fitted Kitchens

All our fitted kitchens are made in the UK. We work with the leading UK fitted kitchen manufacturers who employ state-of-the-art manufacturing technology with time-honoured craftsmanship to provide a wide range of quality complete kitchens. The range of styles and colours offers something for everyone, from beautifully-crafted period styles to stunning contemporary kitchens.

Each of our kitchens is built to stand the test of time, and made with the kind of craftsmanship that ensures exceptional quality and attention to detail. With inspirational concepts and the very highest standards in specification, our kitchen collections bring together a fresh and exciting range of traditional woods and stylish modern finishes to suit every taste and budget.

Although the materials used in our worktops may come from overseas, they're transformed at the hands of skilled British craftsmen into sleek worktops to complement our kitchens.

Sofas & armchairs

We work with some of the top UK-based upholstery makers to ensure John Lewis furniture offers the best standards of craftsmanship, quality and comfort for the price.

Our manufacturers use the best materials and traditional construction methods. We source our fabric collections worldwide to give you huge choice, and carry out vigorous quality testing to reduce the risk of premature wear and tear on fabrics, and guarantee their longevity.

British-made carpets are synonymous with quality, luxury and durability, and our manufacturers use the best materials, techniques and skills. Some still buy, scour, spin and dye their own yarn and control the entire manufacturing process, from the wool on the back of the sheep to the carpet on your floor.

As well as carrying this heritage, all our UK-made carpets are produced in compliance with the latest stringent safety regulations. Buying a British-made carpet means you support British farming; as a group, carpetmakers are the biggest users of British wool in the country. Find out more about our floor coverings services.

Our custom-made lampshades are manufactured in London. We work with UK suppliers who focus on excellence, and use both traditional hand and machine processes alongside the latest modern technology. Our soft shades are hand made by skilled craftsmen using premium silks and plain textures in a range of colours, and our hard shades are made of decorative plains and designs that co-ordinate with our furnishing fabric ranges.

Heyland & Whittle home fragrances

Husband and wife team Paddy Heyland and Ursula Whittle created the Heyland & Whittle brand in 2003. Inspired by their location in rural Surrey, they produce a range of handmade soaps in the traditional cold processed method, using only the very best natural ingredients. Everything is made in England in their own factory. Paddy and Ursula also make toiletries, candles and reed diffusers, combining essential oils, herbs and spices to create a range that's completely free of sulphates and parabens.
