Didn’t we have a lovely time?
Nothing says family fun more than a day at the beach. Splashing about in the surf, building sand castles and enjoying a messy ice cream along the pier is a joyous way to spend a sunny weekend, and it doesn't take a lot of planning either; just a few beach essentials and
an early start to get a good spot before the crowds arrive.
To give you a hand with the planning for your next seaside outing with the kids, I have come up with a few suggestions of what you need to get set for a maritime adventure.
Fun and games for all ages
Sun, sea and sand castles! Whether your children are 4 or 14 - or even 40 - they’ll enjoy at least one or all of them. As always, the teens will take care of themselves, choosing to either listen to music while working on their tan or heading to the nearby arcade with a bulging pocket of your coins. Just in case they look like they might want to partake in a family activity, you might want to bring along a beach rugby ball to have a game of catch.
The toddlers, on the other hand, are another matter as they’ll definitely want to play from morning till night. From building forts to burying dad in the sand, one of the main joys of a sandy beach for kids is that they can spend all day playing with it. Like a massive sand pit that throws up collectable shells and stones, the beach can keep the little ones entertained for most of the day. To help them build their stunning sand castles, they’ll just need a bucket and spade, because the rest, water and sand, will already be at their disposal.
For a dip in the sea
Mum, Dad and the rest of the gang will need to pack their swimming gear for the day. Bright colour and eye-catching patterns will help you to spot each member of the family amongst the crowds, as will striking beach towels. The French brand Vilebrequin has designed a range of swim shorts for adults and kids, so that father and son can have matching beachwear. The turtles and dolphins motif will add a tropical aspect to the British summer.
For the girls up to 12 and baby girls there’s a variety of swimsuits, tankinis and bikinis with fun graphics like butterflies, ice creams and stripes to ensure they look cute and feel comfortable. Hot sand and jagged seabed means that it’s a good idea to get them a pair of Crocsto protect their feet. They’re also extremely comfortable, which is always a good thing if you’re out and about for the day.
Importance of sun protection
Sun damage is not only painful in the short term, but also extremely harmful in the long run. That’s why it’s so very important to wear sunscreen and to make sure you keep topping up regularly. There are also special lotions for children as well.
To figure out how long you can stay in the sun with a given SPF you need to multiply the minutes it takes you to burn without sunscreen with the SFP number on the bottle. For example, if you begin to burn after 15 minutes of being in the sun and you put on SPF 30, then you’ve got up to 450 minutes before you burn.
Of course if anyone goes for a swim or wipes it off by accident, then you’ll need to reapply immediately. You can also get waterproof to cut down the amount of times you have to top up.
Now all we need is a sunny weekend…
