Supporting our communities

Our aims

We're proud of the close links we forge between our Partners and local schools, charities and organisations. And wherever we do business, at home or abroad, we work with communities to make a difference. That's why:

  • Our Community Matters programme in our shops continues to support local charities and community groups.
  • We aim to give at least 1% of pre-tax profits to community initiatives.
  • We will continue to seek out projects that support the John Lewis Foundation at home and abroad.

If you'd like to nominate a good cause for Community Matters please complete the nomination form and take it to the Customer Services department.

The charities we're supporting from February 2017 - April 2017 are:

  • Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association - They provide essential support and specialist educational services to children and their families in the Hampshire area. They also hold coffee mornings and information sessions, organise outings and social gatherings so their members can share experiences. They would use any money donated to set up a new baby support group.
  • Targeted Mentor Support Service - This is an outreach project based in Portsmouth that work with young people aged 14-16 who cannot cope in a mainstream setting for a variety of reasons. The charity's aim to ensure the youngsters come out of compulsory education with qualifications that they wouldn't have been able to achieve at school, in order to give them the best possible future. They would use any money provided to continue the help and support.
  • Home-Start Portsmouth - They are an independent support charity who work exclusively with Portsmouth families. Families can be referred to them for a variety of reasons including domestic abuse, mental health difficulties, housing issues, disability and learning difficulties in parents and children. As most of the services are delivered by volunteers, they would use the donation to recruit, train and supervise the volunteers.

This is how November 2016 - January 2017 Community Matters' charities benefited from being part of the scheme:

  • The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association (Portsmouth) received £1,410
  • The Wildlife Trusts received £720
  • Portsmouth Hospitals Charity received £870
