Q & As

John Lewis 15m Dual Retractable Washing Line 3.4 5 42 42
Collapsed after 6 months When it works it's great but it has broken after 6 months use. I will be returning it. The plastic hooks are not strong enough, it's twice the price of a well known brand version so I was expecting more of it than this. 21 June 2014
Retractable clothes line I have purchased 2 of these clothes lines first one lasted a couple of months and recent one only 1week The rivets on unit just keep popping and line falls to ground with washing on it. Having to return this one again won't be purchasing another 07 May 2014
Need to buy my second one... The plastic casing split on the underside soon after I bought it, and today, laden with bed linen the hook snapped, fortunately I heard it collapse and there is at least a second line so I was able to reinstate the washing! 17 March 2014
Broke after first use Plastic casing cracked and came apart. Unit now unusable and I've thrown it away. 03 March 2014
Poor quality, not fit for the job This is my third one, all replaced under warranty within a year (thank you John Lewis). My issue is with the plastic case attachment to the metal plate. Cheap plastic (not weather proof) being held by 2 metal pins, plastic gives way all the time over time. As I keep getting a replacement, I am ok about it as nothing else on the market at the moment. Keep reusing the same brick bolts! 31 October 2013
Doesn't store flat The unit is quite bulky and, although it pivots on the fixing bracket, it does not allow the unit to lie flush against a wall when not in use. Chances are it will swing loose (and clatter against the wall or post where it is fixed) in the wind which may be annoying to some people. My unit (shop bought) also didn't come with any instructions but, as others have pointed out, it's not rocket science to install. Finally, the line will go quite slack with a heavy load of bed linen so it may be worth installing higher than you might expect. 23 September 2013
Poor quality - not fit for purpose A good idea badly executed. After very little use the plastic body has broken in half along the seam - due to the stresses loaded across the seam when clothes are hanging. Very bad design. Will be returning the item. 11 June 2013
Washing line keeps snapping! Similar to other recent reviews, I've had the same problem where the line sags and then snaps. It's happened three times now, the snap always occurs where the line knots to the hook. It happens when you try and raise the sagging line with a laundry prop or attempt tighten it. I only had two towels on the line last time this happened, so it's not overburdened! Won't be using this washing line again. 27 May 2013
