Rated 1 out of 5 by richk95 Incompatible with Time Machine!
OK, it works with Mac if you just want to store files etc. However I have wasted hours trying to persuade Time Machine to use it for back-ups. Turns out the device is not supported by Apple for this application. I will be returning it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by dynamodollishill A good introduction to a home NAS
I would actually give it 4.5 stars if I could.
Basically it works ... don't expect super fast performance - but at this price point very good.
One important thing is to make sure that you plug it into a 1GB network ... BT Home Hubs only recently have more than one 1GB socket ( a switch can be obtained quite cheaply) - this improves the transfer speed by 10x.
The tools used to maintain it are quite simple - but do the job.
Streaming to a Smart TV worked first time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by 427Garry OMG this was easy to set up
After reading the reviews on here I was slightly put off the unit until I read the review from the gentleman that said it was straight forward so I brought one today and ........ Within say 10 minutes it was set up and fully working with two iPads and two iPhones with all content fully transferred over
Can't really see why anybody else had problems as it was extremely easy and very straight forward
Maybe you guys that can't set it up, did you actually to plug it in???

Rated 1 out of 5 by Peter1400 Not fit for purpose
I bought this at the end of August and followed the instructions to the letter, after about an hour it was all working fine. I managed to load all of my photos and there they were. So now I sorted out the two iPhones and an iPad, again no problems, great thought I, I even logged in from a MacDonald's near Portsmouth (I live in Worthing)the following morning and hey presto there they all were, a bit slow but there they were. That was as good as it got, now two weeks later I cannot access the thing from anywhere except my home wifi, all I get is 'Device offline', I even tried going in via the internet at work, all I get is 'server not accessed try again later'. I have tried everything I know, even reset it all, still nothing. I've tried contacting WD and they don't bother responding and unfortunately the forums I've tried seem to assume everyone has a degree in rocket science, I'm not thick but I don't understand a word of what they say. To produce a product that quite clearly has serious operating and setup problems is very poor form and to back that up with absolutely no customer service is just plain wrong. I'm now thinking that I'll cut my losses and send it back and simply buy another hard drive. Disappointed doesn't even begin to describe how I feel. I only gave it one star because so far it's not managed to lose my data.
My advice is don't buy this product, it's not fit for purpose and simply doesn't do what it says on the tin!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by andrewdsmith96 Up and running, and very pleased
On receiving the device, the initial install didn't quite go to plan and the web UI didn't load correctly, meaning the device seemed far less flexible than I was hoping for.
Nevertheless, I performed a soft reset on the advice of the WD support team, and the UI loaded in full, giving me complete control and customization of the device.
Currently, I'm loading all my photos, music, videos and films onto the device, and all are accessible on my android phone, laptop and smart TV.
Difficult start, but now it's up and running, I'm really pleased with the design, appearance, functionality and admin settings.
Would happily recommend.

Rated 2 out of 5 by NickJuk Not working after just 2 days
Bought the 3TB model 10 days ago, spent hours copying all my family photos and videos to it, now 2 days later it has stopped working. I've tried all the troubleshooting options & now waiting for WD support to advise next step. I've trawled through the WD support community and can't see a solution so I assume I am going to have to return to JL & start again. Maybe I've been unlucky since when it did work it was good for storing and accessing our home photos and videos. Here's my feedback:
-Copying to the drive over home network was quick using PC app - 40Gig in 2-3 hours.
-The Iphone photo app is good imo. It caches the photo thumbnails and images you have accessed so you can access them when offline.
-Streamed photos and even 1080p home movies to our PS3 & new LG 4k TV with no issues, but streaming to a 2 yr old Samsung D7000 TV was not as good even after I updated the firmware on the TV. This could be Samsung being sometimes poor at software imo.
-Interface/dashboard is nice and clear
-The build quality does not seem as good as I was expecting from reading the expert reviews online. Compared to other products it looks cheap plastic with shiny white plastic sides. Not as solid feeling as a WD Passport portable drive. Maybe this is not important to its reliability, but it kind of gives the impression if they used cheap looking materials on the outside, what did they use inside!
-Set up is a bit confusing when it comes to setting users and email addresses imo
-Can't fast forward some high res 1080p movies while streaming, which I can do when streaming the same movie files from our pc over our home network using Plex media or Samsung allshare. This suggests the included media server is basic. Maybe this will improve in software updates.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Johnsmclean WD My Cloud - Undependable
Cheap as chips as a simple NAS but I have not been able to get Time Machine to work with it. Failed attempts to establish initial back up and then failed add new backups. Tried via wifi, ethernet, wiped hard drive twice and still problematical. Returning for refund.
