I speak as someone who was drummed out of my needlework class in 1971 and have hardly touched a sewing machine since.
I had only owned my new Janome a week when I made my first pair of curtains which everyone has admired (to my face) but which I couldn't have even attempted without such a foolproof machine. I love it so much I can't wait to make my next item. The member of staff at John Lewis who sold me the machine was spot on with her advice on the correct model for my ability level.

Great machine, needed a new update from my old singer and this is a real improvement. Janome was recommended to me and when I saw this one online and the reviews I decided to give it a go, very pleased I did.
Very easy to set up and used it straight away. The tension is great and i had no bunching up or pulling through of stitches right from the start.
Lovely to be able to use it straight off without having to read loads of instructions.
One quibble don't like the auto thread for the needle It feels a bit flimsy to me and I think i probably won't use it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Robins Meets my needs
Replacing my old Singer sewing machine which I had had for years I was concerned as to what to buy. I read all the reviews and spoke to various people and decided on this machine. I love it, it meets all my needs for the moment as I have just taken up sewing again. If I need to upgrade later on I will but for the moment it is great. It's not so heavy as my old machine and one of the most useful things is that I have the needle threader - very helpful! The instructions are also very user friendly. Would highly recommend.

My previous machine was about 30 years old when it finally refused to work. I needed a replacement quickly and visited my local John Lewis Store receiving helpful/knowledgeable advice from a member of staff. Having decided on the model I elected to collect the machine from my local Waitrose. I am extremely pleased with the purchase; the instructions are clear and the machine is easy to use. I would highly recommend it to anyone whether a beginner or experienced dressmaker.

Bought this several years ago and did a little sewing. After a dry spell of inspiration / motivation have started a little quilting. I had the zipper foot installed. Like an idiot, I forgot, and tried a zig-zag and bent the needle!! I started shopping around for new feet and needles. It made me realise what a bargain this machine is. It comes with enough feet to meet most needs. It also has a small storage compartment. It's nice to have a complete package that you can use straight away without having to go out and buy additional products.
PS. I eventually found the accessories and now store them in the integrated drawer.

I purchased this machine to replace my older model, what a difference it is so quiet & easy to use. The attachments are easy to connect, the manual clear & simple to follow.

I purchased this machine to replace my very old Singer machine and I am absolutely delighted with it. It is extremely easy to thread, control, use etc., and, it seems to be able to cope very well with heavier weight fabric such as upholstery fabric.
The instructions are easy to follow and there seems to be quite a few 'helpers' on Youtube and various websites etc.
The machine feels quite compact and light enough to transport around but, I could be comparing this to my ancient Singer!
The various feet are very simply swapped over by the user friendly push button system and the see-through and easy to fill spool is brilliant - i.e. no more running out of thread mid-project!
This machine does a lot for it's money - I probably won't use it to it's full potential but, it isn't complicated in any way and, if you are feeling a bit adventurous, there are even more feet/bits you can add on when desired.
I would recommend this machine to just about everyone and at every level of sewing. N.B. I know someone who paid a lot more money for a really more complicated machine and they wish they have purchased this instead.

As an experienced sewer and having been taught by my mother who was a professional dressmaker with a number of high end fashion houses it was time to change the much used Singer machine. I researched and reviewed several machines before settling on this one. The features are easy to use. Love the automatic needle threader. The eyesight is not what it was. Not being able to see the eye in the needle a challenge. I found that I no longer need to insert an invisible zip manually as there is now a foot for that so no longer need to keep close to the zip. I did not need the 100's of different stitches other machines feature so this was definitely the best machine for my needs.
Annette at the Kingston was so helpful. Spending a not insignificant amount of time with me. With a 'get to know your machine' session booked for a couple of weeks time this is a great service. I don't need to be taught to sew however to have the opportunity to spend time getting familiar with my new machine this is a fantastic service. My only comment with this is that it does mean I need to make 2 journeys to the store as I was told I would have to buy the machine before I could book the session. A little inconvenient as I had already selected which one I wanted. Still I am sure I will be able to add to the accessories for my new 'friend' and already have my JL shopping list written.
