Supporting our communities

Our aims

We're proud of the close links we forge between our Partners and local schools, charities and organisations. And wherever we do business, at home or abroad, we work with communities to make a difference. That's why:

  • Our Community Matters programme in our shops continues to support local charities and community groups.
  • We aim to give at least 1% of pre-tax profits to community initiatives.
  • We will continue to seek out projects that support the John Lewis Foundation at home and abroad.

If you'd like to nominate a good cause for Community Matters please complete the nomination form and take it to the Customer Services department.

The charities we're supporting from November 2016 – January 2017 are:

  • The Primrose Centre: The Primrose Centre supports those suffering from Breast Cancer. Our donation will help extend the care offered at the Centre which helps families recover and improve lives.
  • Headway for Medway: Headway for Medway offers support and advice to anyone affected by brain injuries. Our donation will help support a drop in centre which gives socially isolated people with brain injuries a place to receive professional support.
  • The Wildlife Trust: The Wildlife Trust offers information about species, habitats and nature. Our donation will help to restore our nation's wildlife and its natural habitat.

This is how August 2016 - November 2016 Community Matters' charities benefited from being part of the scheme:

  • Family Matters - received £1019
  • Age Exchange - received £1151
  • Christmas Giving - received £830

John Lewis foundation

Since the introduction of the law requiring retailers to charge for single-use carrier bags, our charity, the John Lewis Foundation, has been responsible for distributing the proceeds to UK charities. We’ve aimed to choose charities closely aligned with the principles of the Foundation, supporting activities that promote education and inclusion, and enable employment. We’re sharing the past year’s proceeds of over £155,000 between six charities.
