  • About John Lewis Stratford City

John Lewis Stratford City opened on 13 September 2011 - our first shop to open in London in 20 years. It has 4 floors of selling space, plus a 32,000 square foot Waitrose in the basement.

The unique glazed facade showcases a circular ceramic pattern, designed to symbolise the circle of regeneration in Stratford enabled by the Westfield development and partners working towards London 2012 and its legacy.

News and community information

Supporting our communities

Our aims

We're proud of the close links we forge between our Partners and local schools, charities and organisations. And wherever we do business, at home or abroad, we work with communities to make a difference. That's why:

  • Our Community Matters programme in our shops continues to support local charities and community groups.
  • We aim to give at least 1% of pre-tax profits to community initiatives.
  • We will continue to seek out projects that support the John Lewis Foundation at home and abroad.

And so far we have...

  • Donated £2.2m to our communities in 2012.
  • Launched Bringing Skills to Life, our programme to help people learn the skills they need to succeed in life.
  • Formed strategic partnerships with experts in the field of community work, such as UK Youth.
  • Made community meeting rooms available for free in 19 of our shops.
  • Launched cotton farmer training in India to help farmers grow more sustainable cotton and improve their livelihoods.

Community Matters is a charitable giving scheme that runs throughout our shops.

Every 3 months each shop selects 3 community groups to help. Customers are then directly involved in deciding how much each nominated group receives, by using a token to vote for the organisation they'd like to support.

Each shop has £3000 to donate which will be split between the charities according to the proportion of the vote they've received from customers. This means that if a charity receives 31% of the votes, it'll receive a £930 donation.

Charities will receive support in whichever way will benefit them the most, either in the form of John Lewis products, volunteering time from Partners, or as financial support.

The Community Matters boxes will be located in catering areas of each shop. Customers will be given one token per transaction, and will be able to follow how much of the vote each organisation receives over the 3 months.

Organisations eligible for Community Matters include charities, schools and relevant community groups. Partners will look at the requests that are submitted and choose 3 organisations to support for the following 3 months. Organisations that would like to be considered for Community Matters should visit their local John Lewis to pick up a nomination form.
