How to wear illuminating make-up – whatever your age

By Lyndsay Conway, Editor

Glossy, glowing make-up is the ageless beauty look we’re coveting this spring. Follow this month’s EDIT to discover how to illuminate your make-up in five different ways.

Group products

If there’s one trend from this season’s catwalks we can all try, regardless of age, skin tone or texture, it’s illuminating make-up. Think glittering eyes, dewy skin and glossy lips: this is a new take on natural make-up...

Glowing make-up isn’t exactly a new trend but this season the look is amped up, thanks to a host of new products set to make you shine. Made from new formulas that are so much more skin- (and wrinkle-) friendly, these buys are easy to apply and sit lightly on the skin, flattering all ages and complexions.

Along with foundation, glitter eyeliner has moved on in recent years to be more finely milled, creating a subtle look that is chic and sophisticated, rather than bold and brash – plus glamorous, easy-to-wear lipgloss is having a serious renaissance for spring.

A couple of easy complexion boosting tricks

The starting point for any illuminated make-up look has to be foundation. For a soft-focus, filtered version of your own skin, try the YSL Touche Eclat All-In-One Glow Foundation, £33.50

Glowing skin is a huge trend right now and for good reason: matte foundations are less forgiving than those infused with light-reflecting particles and tend to highlight flaws, rather than hide them – especially on more mature skin.

So this season, forget heavy, full coverage and opt for something more translucent, because lighter foundation doesn’t mean a less perfectfinish: buy clever and opt for something buildable to create the perfect canvas for you.

The latest launch from YSL is our new go-to and will give a healthy, dewy finish to skin. Use your fingertips to warm the foundation as you blend it in for a more flawless end result.

If you haven’t heard of the Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter, £30, yet, we’re here to let you know it’s a game-changer. For a megawatt, lit-from-within complexion that will truly brighten skin, the Flawless Filter just cannot be beaten.

As well as giving even the driest complexion a luminous look, this versatile product can be worn four different ways: as a primer, underneath your foundation to create a backlit radiance that’s subtle but noticeable; mixed with your foundation to brighten your everyday look; dabbed on the forehead, down the nose and along the cheeks and cupid’s bow to highlight your features; or, for an unrivaled intensity that’s sure to get you noticed, wear alone to completely illuminate your complexion.

A quick cheat to improve that youthful glow

Even after applying a soft-focus foundation and Instagram-worthy highlighter, a luminous glow still wouldn’t be complete without a pop of colour. Invoke the natural flush of youth with a shimmering pink swept over the apples of the cheek, to give you that ‘I’ve just been to the gym look’ even on tired Monday mornings.

Want to personalise the look? Mix and match shades from the Nars Limited Edition Narsissist Wanted 1 Cheek Palette, £45, to create your ideal colour. We love a shimmering, lighter hue layered over a bold pink for a natural-looking finish. Or change it up for night by taking the boldest red shade from your cheek up to the hairline. Debbie Harry, eat your heart out.

A glittering update for your eye makeup

Think glitter isn’t for daytime? A sweep of shimmer along the eyeline is the new way to light up your look in an understated way that can even be worn to work.

The Limited Edition Long-Wear Sparkle Stick from Bobbi Brown, £23, is our new favourite product for your eyes, thanks to the pearl-infused formula that glides on easily without pulling or drying the eye area. Use the angled brush to seamlessly apply colour just above the top eyelashes for an easy way to quickly update your everyday make-up. If you love this look, vamp it up even further by applying colour up to the eye socket for a dramatic take on the trend.

Try Mac’s legendary Glitter Pots, £16.50, to elevate your look to whole new levels: wear it on the cheekbone, or along your hair parting for a festival inspired look to catch the light in a new and exciting way.

Dior Lipstick & Bobbi Brown Shadow Stick

An instant lip update for day or night

Gloss lipstick is back in a big way for spring, which is great news as it’s so much easier to wear than matte, especially in warmer weather.

Don’t think this look is for you? The Dior Addict Lacquer Plump, £28.50, has the flexibility and wearability of a gloss, but the long-lasting properties of a lipstick, making it a realistic choice to wear all day and at any age. This clever lacquer also contains hyaluronic acid, one of the most recent anti-ageing discoveries that hydrates and plumps your lips for long-lasting benefits, even when you're not wearing it.

Mix and match the hot pink and red shades to create a look that’s bespoke to you. We love the way a high-shine pout will complement your new glowing complexion, updating your look for the new season in one easy step.
