On trial: Dyson's Cool™ Gen1 TP10 Air Purifier

Lucy Scott,-Senior Editor

Dyson’s new purifier offers clean, crisp air at the touch of a button - with a quiet mode for the light sleepers amongst us

I live in a house, a very small house in the country. And there’s five of us - two adults, two kids and a newly-crawling baby I'm always running after with a vacuum. There’s also my obsession with plants and flowers and weekly visits from our pals with dogs, all of which adds up to a lot of potential pollutants, something that Dyson’s Cool™ Gen1 TP10 Air Purifier aims to combat.

So, when I was asked to put it to the test I jumped at the chance of breathing clean, cool air into our rooms.

How does it work?

Most of us are aware that poor air quality isn't just a problem outside, it's a problem inside too – and all of the above, including chemical cleaning sprays and odours from stoves, can get trapped in the air in your home.  The Dyson Purifier removes them by drawing in and trapping these pollutants and replacing them with clean air.

This is done thanks to Air Multiplier™ technology, which can project 290 litres of clean air per second throughout the room. Per second! There’s also a two-phase filtration which features a 360° sealed filter that combines a HEPA and activated carbon filter to remove even microscopic allergens as small as 0.1 micron and 99.95% of pollutant particles.

This is the only purifier on the market fully sealed to HEPA H13 standard - and it’s not just the filter, it's the whole Purifier. So what goes inside, stays inside.

If that wasn’t enough, the purifier can also act like a fan to cool you and your whole room at various speeds.

What makes Dyson’s Purifier different?

Simply put, the brilliant technology. the purifier is full of sensors that constantly analyse your air, automatically sensing, capturing and trapping pollutants to purify your whole room – while a unique algorithm cross-checks data per second to monitor, report and improve your air quality.

This is one of the only purifiers capable of cleaning the whole room, thanks to 360-degree oscillation. The air is then diverted through the back of the machine to maintain effective purification.

There’s also a super quiet Night Mode with a dimmed display designed to monitor and purify your room while you sleep.

Is the Dyson Purifier easy to use?

Yes, it couldn’t be easier. Once you’ve unwrapped the filter you just plug it in and you can control it via the remote or the free Dyson app. I left mine on Automatic so it’ll purify the room and then stop, starting again when it thinks you need another dose of pure air.

The remote control helpfully attaches to the fan with a magnet which is one of my favourite design elements because it means you always know where it is (no mean feat in this household).

The app is also super user-friendly and has several easy-to-follow videos on Getting Started, Replacing Filters and Top Tips for Purifier Placement.

Is it worth it?

As with all Dyson products, the price makes this an investment purchase. However, I think it’s one worth making. The difference between a room where we’ve used the Purifier compared to another one is palpable.

One of my daughters suffers with asthma, which is exacerbated when our friend's dog comes to visit. And while we’re strict about what rooms the dog can go in, it was a great comfort having the purifier on all afternoon, knowing it was removing any pet dander that might irritate her.

The purifier has also been worth its weight in gold in our attic bedroom, which can become unbearably hot and stuffy. The long range projection and powerful stream of purified airflow has been a lifesaver in keeping us cool, and better still, the Night Mode means your sleep isn't disturbed at all.
