These baubles are made by skilled glass blowers and artists in Bohemia, Czech Republic using a combination of traditional and new techniques, both mouth-blown and hand-made. In the 18th century, the first “costume” glass jewellery was produced in the town, which went on to become the world centre of costume jewellery manufacture.

The products are initally produced as 150cm quartz glass tubes. Some types of ornaments can be free blown (baubles, olives, reflectors, bells, treetops), while others shaped in moulds (figures, birds, houses etc.) The ornaments are then finished in a wide range of techniques- from silver-plating, dipping in coloured varnish, decorative painting, spraying, winding with silver-plated wire, coating with ballotini, applying glimmer (glass dust) or fabrics, using print technologies (silkscreen painting, tampon printing), or combining these with other materials (ribbons, pieces of embossed metal, glass stones etc.)

After the decoration has been completed and dried, the neck of the ornament is broken off and either gold or silver caps are mounted for hanging.
