While an overlocker is very useful for finishing edges, it cannot be used as a traditional sewing machine because it does not have the capability to create a straight stitch, a zigzag stitch, or other common sewing stitches that are needed for many sewing projects. In general, if you want to do a wider range of sewing tasks beyond just finishing edges, it's best to use a traditional sewing machine.
