This Black History Month, we’re celebrating and honouring the richness of Black hair, skincare and make-up

October is Black History Month, a time to share, celebrate and understand the impact of Black heritage and culture. At John Lewis & Partners, we're celebrating Black History Month with the help of talented Black creatives, as well as our wonderful Partners.

The Black History Month 2024 theme is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’, and we are taking this time to shine the spotlight on Black beauty, embracing the beautiful diversity in natural hair textures, styles and colours. Because we’re at our best when we’re free to be ourselves, with all our wonderful differences.

The content creator and friend of John Lewis is also a new mum and co-founder of Business Of Colour, a digital platform for black-owned businesses. Here, she speaks of the power of embracing who you are, and says her beauty routine uses minimalist makeup products to highlight her natural self.

Describe your beauty routine…

My beauty routine is all about simplicity and effectiveness. As a busy mum, I don't have much time, so I focus on using fewer, high-quality products that really work. For me, it's all about hydration, sun protection, and a nourishing skin care regime that keeps things simple but still delivers great results. A good moisturiser with SPF, a gentle cleanser, and a hydrating serum are my essentials. I believe in investing in products that are effective, so I can keep my routine short but still take care of my skin in the best way possible.

You are a champion of minimalist beauty - why is this important to you?

To me, minimalism is about embracing authenticity. By stripping back the layers of unnecessary product use, we highlight our natural selves, which is powerful. It’s a reminder that beauty should empower us, not mask us. Focusing on simplicity can create a more sustainable and self-affirming approach to beauty.

As a mother, I hope to teach my child that beauty is about confidence, self-love, and self-expression.

What beauty wisdoms have you learned along the way in life?

One key lesson I’ve learnt is that beauty is deeply personal. It evolves with us, reflecting where we are in life. As I’ve matured, I’ve realised that less is often more — caring for myself holistically, rather than obsessing over appearances, is the key to feeling beautiful inside and out.

You became a mum in April - what beauty wisdom do you hope to pass down?

As a mother, I hope to teach my child that beauty is about confidence, self-love, and self-expression. I want them to know that their worth isn’t tied to appearance but to their inner qualities. Encouraging a positive body image, a balanced view of beauty, and the value of kindness is the legacy I’d aim to pass down.

At the John Lewis Partnership, we're always proud to be ourselves. Does this ring true with you?

Being proud to be yourself, in line with the John Lewis Partnership ethos, resonates deeply. There’s something incredibly powerful about embracing who you are unapologetically. Being proud means understanding your values and standing firm in your individuality. It’s a mindset that allows for genuine connection with others and the world around you.

For me, it’s a reminder of the importance of representation, resilience, and the ongoing work needed for equality.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month is a time of reflection, celebration, and education. It acknowledges Black communities' struggles and triumphs and recognises their vital contributions to society. For me, it’s a reminder of the importance of representation, resilience, and the ongoing work needed for equality. It’s also a moment to honour the legacy of those who came before and to pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.

What’s your favourite beauty product?

The Nars Sheer Glow Foundation in Macao is one of the best brands for colour matching women of colour without making it look like you have foundation on. The coverage is amazing, light and flawless. It is great for everyday without making you feel like you are wearing makeup.

Can you share a beauty wisdom you’ve learned in life?

Use night cream – older you will be grateful you did.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

It's about sharing and celebrating the richness and diversity of the world. Black History Month is a moment in time where I can take stock, realign, reflect and understand what is important to me and what makes me special as an individual. It's a moment when I can share my experiences and culture, learn more about the contributions of Black people and more importantly, continue to be a positive role model for any other person of colour in and out of the Partnership.
