It can be tricky knowing what to pack in your suitcase. Natalie Wright, Partner & Beauty Guide at our John Lewis & Partners shop in Cambridge, shares her advice

Protect

We all know suncream is a suitcase essential – no one wants to come home with sunburn. Natalie warns: ‘UV rays are damaging to both the skin and face, and can cause premature ageing. You should always wear a broad spectrum SPF, even if it’s cloudy!’

To help protect your body from sun damage, Natalie advises using a ‘mist that you can spritz throughout the day for an added boost’. Shiseido Sports Invisible Protective Mist SPF 50+ is non-sticky and feels cool and refreshing when applied. Natalie says ‘this formula is great for those who like to squeeze in a workout while on holiday, as the formula will stay in place even during intense exercise.’

For your face, Natalie recommends Dermalogica’s Prisma Protect Face SPF 30. This multitasking formula doubles as a moisturiser, so you won't have to pack both, and helps to enhance skin’s natural luminosity. Natalie recommends applying it ‘at least half an hour before sun exposure, and always reapply after swimming or showering.'

Reset

At the end of the day, you’ll need a hardworking cleanser to remove all traces of suncream. Natalie recommends Evolve Organic Beauty's Gentle Cleansing Melt. ‘This luxurious cleanser transforms into an oil on contact with the skin, giving it a really deep clean. It also contains baobab oil, which helps to hydrate and soften dry complexions.’

Restore lost moisture to your body with an intensely hydrating formula. Instead of a traditional cream, Natalie suggests using a rich balm, like Liz Earle’s Skin Replenishing Body Balm in Lavender & Vetiver: ‘It absorbs quickly, but will keep skin nourished for up to 48 hours.’ Shea butter, rice bran oil and black oat extract will all help to soothe sensitive or sun-stressed skin.

Pamper

Masks are perfect for giving skin some TLC after a long day in the sun. Natalie loves the Calendula & Aloe Soothing Hydration Masque from Kiehl’s: ‘It has a light, gel-like texture that I find really refreshing after a hot day. Plus, it contains aloe vera, which can soothe sunburn and prevent peeling, thanks to its naturally hydrating and healing properties.’

Natalie also recommends using a targeted eye mask. She says: ‘Our eyes are usually where we see the first signs of ageing – the skin is thinner, so fine lines, wrinkles and dark circles start to appear there first.’ Natalie recommends applying Lancôme's Advanced Génifique Light-Pearl Eye Serum Mask two or three times a week for a smoother, more radiant-looking eye area.
