Capturing the mood of the moment, these are the new season’s most hypnotic scents

Ah, spring. A time of hope, renewal and of tentatively layering lighter clothing to transition into the new season. As we start to look ahead to balmy afternoons and sun-kissed skin, there’s no better way to evoke and mirror this special time of year than with a gorgeous scent.

To help transport you to bright, sunny climes – even on grey days – Lily Starling, John Lewis Partner and Fragrance Buyer, shares her pick of the best springtime perfumes from each fragrance family.

Woody

Spring scents, like the season’s wardrobe, tend to be lighter. ‘That doesn’t mean forgoing spicy, rich and woody fragrances,’ says Lily. ‘Try something that mixes woody notes with decacent florals, such as patchouli, or tonka bean. Hermès’ Terre d’Hermès Eau Intense Vetiver is a deep, sensual option.’ Douse your wrists then wait for the compliments to roll in.

Fruity

Prefer your fragrances a bit brighter? Notes of fig, bergamot and orange blossom offer a crisp, fruity twist on more traditional floral and woody bases. ‘Opt for sparkling citrus top notes and swirls of lemon oil for clarity and a joyful energy boost,’ says Lily. ‘Marc Jacobs’ Daisy Glow is a stand-out fruity scent.’

Floral

It's spring, so of course we have a crop of florals to pick from. ‘Seek out soft, romantic top notes, such as pink pepper or jasmine, alongside subtly seductive ylang-ylang and neroli,’ says Lily. ‘These perfumes will make you think of long, lazy springtime days.’ Layer with sweet citrus and/or warm woody notes to help soothe a busy mind.

Amber

‘Inviting and intoxicating, amber scents feature timeless notes of bergamot, neroli and saffron, softened with cocoa shell and tonka bean,’ says Lily. ‘They make perfect perfumes for spring staycations. Carolina Herrera’s Very Good Girl Elixir is a nuzzly, skin-soaker that’ll make perfect strangers stop to ask what scent you’re wearing.’

Vanilla

This season’s trending note? A modern take on vanilla. To be more specific, this means a move away from sugary sweet towards scents that are sophisticated and sultry in tone. ‘Featuring one of the most popular and versatile fragrance ingredients, our new vanilla-based scents are real head-turners,’ says Lily.
