What will the best-dressed feet be wearing as things hot up? Try our men’s footwear selection on for size
It’s that time again: the moment when the sun actually starts shining, and you begin to think about finding the right men’s summer shoes. Whether you’re staying on UK soil or are planning a trip to warmer climes, you need the right footwear to move through the season’s many and varied events with ease.
So, what types of shoes are, in fact, the best for summer? From men's white trainers to men's loafers and men's sandals, read on for the lowdown on which styles to wear when. Best feet forward…
Sandals
Perfect for chilling at the beach (or the beach bar), sandals are your summer ride-or-dies. But we’re not talking basic, boring flip-flops; choose stylish slip-ons in dark, mahogany or tan tones so that they’ll work with more elevated looks just as well as with shorts. For example, these handsome sandals from Dune pair nicely with chinos and a linen shirt for a low-key night out – or even a wedding on the beach.
Mules
Not ready to show your toes? Jump on board the huge trend for clog sandals – also known as mules. These closed-toe wonders are super comfy and look great with denim, khaki, white and black. While they’re not going to make the cut for any formal summer events, depending on the style you choose (hint: not Crocs) they can work with moredressed-up looks for casual nights.
White trainers
For those who are always on the go, or who need the comfort and support of sportier designs, reach for a pair of classic white trainers. They’re the backbone of the most stylish summer wardrobes, and go with everything from shorts to denim. Just make sure you invest in breathable socks and air your kicks in between wearing them to avoid the less-than-ideal well-worn whiff…
Espadrilles
What shoes are good for hot weather? Easy: espadrilles. These are, perhaps, the epitome of men’s summer footwear. Originating in Spain (they are believed to have been worn as far back as the 14th century), these shoes feature a canvas cotton upper and jute rope sole, which promotes air circulation around the feet to make them extra breathable yet comfy. If you’re never tried a pair, get involved – but ditch the socks, or go for invisible sock liners. And take care with the vino tinto, as they can stain easily.

Loafers
Typically made from leather or suede, loafers are a timeless, versatile summer shoe. Originally designed to loaf around inside the home (see what they’ve done with the name?), loafers’ easygoing design means they can be worn with everything from a linen suit to jeans or even shorts. Jetting off for a city break with just a carry-on? Loafers have you covered from sightseeing to bar hopping. Care for them by giving them a quick wipe-down using a soft cloth or brush to lift away dirt.
Deck shoes
Deck shoes have leather laces threaded through eyelets all the way around the shoe, which can provide an extra comfortable fit and better stability. They come in a huge range of colours, some with fashion-forward contrast lacing. In terms of versatility, this footwear is similar to loafers; wear a pair with practically anything. When it comes to styling, we suggest you either keep your ankles bare for the classic look or, if your look is more 80s preppy, add colourful socks. Follow the easy care instructions and wipe these shoes down often to ensure their longevity.
Sliders
The cooler, carefree cousin of the sandal, sliders have gone from occasionally being spotted poolside to becoming a high-status men’s summer footwear staple. Relaxed and comfortable, thanks to the highly cushioned base, these shoes could not be easier to look after as they’re designed to be water-resistant and easily wiped clean. They’re perfect paired with shorts, just make sure you step away from the socks. Oh, and don’t even think about driving a car while wearing them: they’re called sliders for a reason.
