Channel effortless French style with chic items from this covetable label

See by Chloé is a name that conjures luxury without feeling unattainable, a brand that evokes a Gallic sensibility with a bohemian spirit. The little sister to the Parisian fashion house Chloé, this year marks the diffusion label’s 20th anniversary and a fresh creative direction with the newly-appointed (and sustainably-minded) Gabriela Hearst at its helm.

John Lewis & Partners has stocked See by Chloé’s always desirable range of handbags since 2019, adding ready-to-wear pieces to the offering last year. Samantha Rowe, Partner and handbags buyer, says its items resonate with those looking for ‘unique and contemporary designs, and it’s also one of the only brands to successfully mix suede and leather.’

This fusion is obvious in the Mara, compact crossbody characterised by an oversize ring feature on the front flap. ‘It’s perfect to dress up a day to night outfit,’ says Samantha. And it’s on the more reasonably priced end of the spectrum when it comes to designer handbags.

The seamless shift from day to night mentioned by Samantha is what drew the eye of Elena Bergonzi, Partner and Junior Buyer for womenswear. ‘The collection boasts free-spirited dresses, ruffle detail blouses, and kick-flare jeans, perfect for multitudes of settings, which is ideal for the new normal,’ she explains. Top of her list for spring are the floral embroidery blouse with cut-out embroidery and the wide leg jeans with playful braiding.

See by Chloé never veers far from its core DNA of whimsical floral prints, feminine broderie anglaise trims and delicate neck ties. But it’s never predictable: this season’s hits also include an oversize cargo jacket and matching androgynous trousers that look directional styled with a tie-dye tee. In Samantha’s view, it’s the brand’s ability to nod to trends while not being dictated by them that makes its pieces investment-worthy. ‘The quality and craftsmanship is excellent – these are pieces you will have in your wardrobe forever,’ she says. ‘You are also buying a piece designed by Gabriela Hearst and her team at Chloé for a fraction of the price, which is incredible.’
