AND/OR: where Frida Kahlo meets Californian cool

Frida Kahlo’s iconic style plus Californian-inspired denim: it’s not the most obvious fashion formula, but for John Lewis & Partners’ in-house lifestyle brand AND/OR, it’s a winning one.

Since its launch in 2017, AND/OR’s mission has been to produce authentic, high-end quality denim with an accessible price tag. This has been achieved through collaborating with Los Angeles-based denim experts Caroline Calvin and Joie Rucker, who impart their invaluable knowledge around fit, washes and finishing techniques. Each style of jeans is named after one of LA’s most iconic spots, such as Silver Lake, Venice Beach and Malibu. 

The collection has grown to include a complementary offering of desirable separates, shoes, accessories and lingerie, all imbued with a laid-back sensibility. For AW19, it was the personal style and work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo who set the creative agenda.

‘She is the embodiment of female strength and individuality,’ says Fiona Goedhardt, Partner & Designer. ‘Her iconic looks were bold and unique, which resonate with the AND/OR ethos of creating your own style and championing individuality.’

The late artist’s embrace of traditional Mexican dress is evoked through voluminous silhouettes and rich detailing. The Frida blouse, with its intricate gold embroidery around the cuffs and collar, captures Kahlo’s bohemian spirit.

Puffed sleeves on pretty openwork tops and breezy trapeze dresses, such as the Mendez tiered hem dress, create interest while remaining easy to wear. The floral headdresses that Kahlo sported in her self portraits have inspired pretty prints, such as the Calito and Sofia Santiago.

Also new for the season is the introduction of sustainably produced denim – 80% of the collection is made using organic cotton, recycled polyester and Lycra, which means a low environmental impact. By summer 2020, the entire denim range will be low-impact.
