5 fashion week trends you can get onboard with now
From oversized denim to daytime metallics, these are worth your money
The recent run of shows might have focused on projecting what we’ll be wearing come spring/summer 2024, but look a little closer and there was much on the catwalk and street-style set to borrow for your wardrobe today. From the standout colour to the styling tricks the A-list love, here are five fashion week trends you don’t want to sleep on.
1. Pleats, please
Pleats are big news this season and it’ll be of no surprise that it’s on skirts they’re best deployed. Forget the school-like reputation and lean into their punkish appeal instead, pairing traditional plaids with contrasting bright knitwear, or for a preppier execution wear a traditional twinset with your pleated skirt. Keep boots chunky, or do as the street-style set did at the recent shows and dance through the season in ballet flats.
2. Big denim energy
You don’t need us to tell you that denim is a staple worth investing in, and yet here we are. But denim has a new energy this season, charged with details and an oversized silhouette that you can add to your wardrobe now. Consider the frill of this Whistles collar, for instance. It elevates while still remaining infinitely wearable. Next, try baggier jeans worn with delicate shoes or chunky boots – you decide. And just because we’re heading into winter doesn’t mean you should discredit white jeans. Brilliantly chic. Literally. (Unless it’s raining.)
3. All fired up
Make red your go-to colour this season. Go for it in top-to-toe (accessories and all) as they did on many catwalks or instead break it up to ease yourself into this trend. It’s best executed in neat, sharp silhouettes or on playful dresses. Just pull back from wearing too much as the Christmas celebrations amp up – unless you want a Mother Christmas vibe.
4. Frilling scenes
Those with a flair for the feminine will be pleased to see that the trend for all things frilled and flounced isn’t going anywhere. But the new decree for voluminous pieces is to wear ones that feel most at home in the daytime, in a palette that feels unexpected. Look to decadent chocolate brown, shades of grey and bookish navy, best worn with contrast knits or a teddy coat.
5. 24-hour party people
Get the party started, no matter the time. Call it the post-pandemic effect but we’re done with saving things for best. Don your shiniest, sparkle in your brightest and swoosh in your flounciest all day, every day. A great way to start tapping into this catwalk trend is with accessories, be it the flash of a silver shoe or the sighting of a metallic bag in the middle of the week. Fab-u-lous.
