A grown-up take on the utility trend

Move over khaki shacket, the utility trend just got irresistibly sophisticated

When it comes to translating the ‘Utility’ look to real life, it can raise a few sartorial alarm bells. Perhaps it conjures up memories of ill-advised fashion choices of the 90s – those multi-pocket combat trousers and camo camis that were top of everyone’s wishlist circa All Saints’ first album release. Or maybe it’s a trend you feel is better suited to the younger generation – whose khaki shackets have become an undisputed staple of the Gen Z uniform.

But for s/s 20, these associations don’t apply. The utility trend has grown up, and brings with it a whole host of refined wardrobe staples that blend all the ease of utilitarian dressing with a new spirit of femininity and elegance. From chic belted dresses to well-cut jumpsuits and sleek, functional accessories, these are sophisticated wardrobe heroes that require zero thought.

And they couldn’t have emerged at a better time; in a world where we’re bombarded with news, notifcations and status updates every second of every day, we’re crying out for simplicity in the way we dress: easy-yet-covetable pieces to throw on and go, leaving all your brainspace for tackling the day ahead. Here’s how to do it…

Opt for elegant belting

Straps, D-rings and drawstrings may have their roots in army gear, but there's nothing military about these belted designs. Knee-length shirt dresses, wrap-around coats and cinched in trousers are the polished utility pieces you can wear for a day of meetings.

Go hands free

Who has the energy to carry their own bag these days? A practical crossbody or belt bag is the answer. Crafted in quality leather or faux leather for a vegan option (the John Lewis & Partners Kin range is synthetic only) look for something with a fuss-free shape. The grown-up utility bag should have minimal detailing and room for just the essentials.

Embrace one-step dressing

There’s nothing more stress-free than wearing one garment, and one garment only. A well-cut jumpsuit makes looking chic simpler than ever and dips effortlessly into the utility trend without even trying. Keep the look elevated by styling with heels and carefully-applied lipstick.

Think not quite white

Bright white jeans used to be synonymous with utility styling, but now a more nuanced take has emerged: the off-white – or ecru – jean is having a moment and feels particularly desirable in wide-leg cuts or cord fabrics. Style them with a khaki silk blouse and high-heeled boots.

Say no to collars

A collarless shirt isn't new to the utility repertoire, but the way you wear it should be. Up-spec the look with contemporary prints, silk and subtle details. Worn tucked in to a belted high-waist trouser, this is grown-up utility dressing at its best.
