How to style a big collar

Bigger is better with this fun accessory

Rejoice! This season’s must-have accessory doesn’t care what the weather is doing, how narrow your feet are, or if you’re carrying a few extra pounds. The beauty of a statement collar – and you can’t fail to have noticed its prevalence by now – is that it is literally the indulgent cherry on the top of your outfit.

Big collar trend

Above, we’ve got a detachable collar from a top by And/Or, nattily styled over a gingham, suits-all dress by Kin, and its white counterpart over a leopard-print jumper by And/Or (yes, that’s two tops for the price of one). This is the easiest way to get in on the trend: experiment with layering a lone collar over knits (cardigans included), tops and dresses to add a touch of prettiness. A crew-shaped neckline is best, but you can have fun by adding a standalone one under an already ruffled collar such as the Cate cardigan, below, for extra drama.

Large collar trend

There are plenty of pieces that come decked with larger-than-life collars, however – and one with a frilled or embroidered edge is sure to pep up your video calls. Again, play around with layering – a grey jumper doesn’t feel so drab with a printed Peter Pan collar poking out, and it’s the perfect way to tap into the cottagecore trend. And that’s the magic of this look-at-me neckline: suddenly, whatever you’re wearing feels brand-new.
