Outfit ideas to take laid-back style to the next level

You only have to glance at the runways and street style sets to know that double denim is back. Rachel Morgans, Fashion Director at John Lewis, says, “There are so many ways to style double denim, from a sporty-casual take that plays with proportions, such as a fitted shirt and baggy jeans, to structured, monochrome looks for the office, and a full on 70s revival of flares with a denim jacket.”

What is double denim?

It’s when you wear two or more denim pieces together. This usually means pairing a denim jacket or shirt with jeans, but it also works with denim shorts, skirts and accessories. To make the trend work for you, find your preferred fit from the denim brands to know, choose your shade - or colours - and take inspiration from these outfit ideas for the office, evening drinks and lazy Sundays.

Office days

Matching the exact shade of denim for top and bottom makes a sharp, monochrome statement. Australian brand Aje’s structured pieces give a suit-like feel that’s perfect for work, styled up with slingbacks and a pop-of-red bag that commands attention.

Evening drinks

For a bold take on the trend, contrast the shades. Instead of the standard blue hue try green, pink, white or black to create an eye-catching, coordinated look. The crisp pairing palette of a dark green jacket with rolled-up PAIGE blue-wash jeans plays with contrast for a dynamic look.

Evening drinks

Relaxed streetwear-inspired silhouettes are ideal for slow weekends; think oversized shirts with baggy or barrel legs. Try Free People, or Samsøe Samsøe’s jeans paired with the matching jacket worn over a white or pastel shirt with loafers or trainers to nail off-duty chic.

Clever layering

Break up double denim with neutral anchor pieces such as white t-shirts, striped tops or coloured wool jumpers for easy transitional dressing. Fine knits can be tied around shoulders, or a zip-through cardigan can change the definition of your outfit from smart to off-duty.

Accessories

Don't over-accessorise - denim carries itself, but no outfit is complete without some final touches. This season that means a patterned silk scarf tied around your shoulders or worn as a headscarf, your favourite jewellery, a leather belt and a statement bag.

Double denim FAQs:

Can you wear black denim with blue denim?

Yes, mixing black and blue denim creates a high-contrast, contemporary look that can be more interesting than matching double denim shades. Try washed black jeans with a blue denim shirt tucked in.

Can you wear double denim to a smart-casual event?

Yes, you can if you style it well. Keep the pieces neat and fitted, and think carefully about shades. Monochrome double denim looks the most elegant, while tonal outfits are more modern. Add dressy shoes and a nice jacket.
