From optimistic florals to wear now to the perfect white T-shirt, here are the essentials you need to take those tentative steps towards new beginnings

Spring is upon us and freedom is the air. The most pressing question now? What are you going to be wearing to celebrate when a life beyond our joggers becomes a realistic possibility?

As restrictions slowly ease, many of us will be looking for ways to reboot our wardrobe with clever solutions that will suit life this season and beyond. Here’s a guide to new season style fixes that are guaranteed to ensure you’re ready for action.

Optimistic florals

Whether you’re drawn to bright and bold rose motifs or ditzy blooms that conjure hazy summer days, a floral print is a sure-fire way to plant your wardrobe firmly in spring. The perfect companion to denim or a functional trench coat, a botanical motif will raise a smile as well as your style game. A floral slip dress worn with a slouchy cashmere knit and hiking boots is the ultimate park-bench picnic look

The wear with everything white T-shirt

Finding the right white T-shirt is a bit like finding the right white emulsion for your bedroom ceiling: straightforward in theory but a truly arduous task in reality. Choose carefully, though, and you’ll find a staple that’s so reliable and so transformative that it adds a hint of newness to even the most lacklustre pieces in your wardrobe. To find the right one for you, pay close attention to fabric – if you prefer an opaque look, for instance, opt for heavy cotton. It’s also worth taking time to consider sleeve length: a ¾ or half sleeve is a great option for layering. Those who want a classic that works well with jeans should look out for T-shirts which promise a ‘boyfriend’ fit.

The denim jacket

With the promise of beer gardens and outdoor fun with friends on the horizon, spring outerwear has rarely been more important. If you’re tired of wearing the same old puffer jacket, the return of the denim jacket is a comeback to embrace. Seek out oversized styles where possible so there’s room for a sweater or hoodie underneath. And don’t feel obliged to stick to classic blue tones. A dark green jacket is a great option for those who love florals while a crisp ecru one may inspire that ‘new season’ feeling you have been waiting for.

Woman in white dungarees

Easy-going dungarees

We’re not done with our tracksuits quite yet but with the school run back and our diaries beginning to fill with garden gatherings, the prospect of a new take on leisurewear is cheering. A super-comfortable pair of dungarees is the spring style solution for this middle ground. Wear over a classic T-shirt or breton stripe now, then add a little jazz later with a printed silk shirt and a pair of statement sandals

Very mellow yellow

Will you opt for mimosa or lemon? Does sunshine or chartreuse float your boat? Whatever your favourite shade of yellow, there’s never been a better time to embrace fashion’s jolliest shade and let the hue boost your mood. To dress yourself happy this spring, team your yellow of choice with muted separates — lemon and indigo make ideal colour companions. There’s also a lot of serotonin to be gained from clashing this colour with a contrasting print.

To top it all off

The fashion world’s great tastemakers love to take a utilitarian accessory and imbue it with new found style credibility. The baseball cap is the latest item to undergo this treatment. Once the saviour of runners, tennis players and school mums on bad hair days, the cap is now the season’s must-have accessory. Opt for one in a neutral shade and wear with trainers and a trench coat for an outdoors-ready look that’s deeply rooted in the ‘now’.
