Make your outdoor spaces feel like home by following our expert advice for creating open-air areas you’ll hate to leave

Sorry to break it to you but your parents lied. Sometimes it really is what’s on the outside that counts – at least when it comes to your outdoor space. Be it a city balcony or a teeny tiny patio, we all need somewhere to enjoy summer. But if things are looking more savage garden than hot girl summer at the moment, despair not. Here are some tips for how to give your open-air space a new lease of life.

Keep your seating space simple

A modular sofa is the garden accessory you never knew you needed. It’s the perfect backdrop for coffee and cake when the sun’s high, and a cocktail (or three) when the kids have gone to bed. There’s no faffing about with covers or anything like that either – the cushions come shower-resistant as standard. Best of all, we offer a matching table too. Did someone say Pimm’s?

Embrace the dark side

Spend too long in the sun and you’ll end up resembling a lobster – not a look that’s on-trend this year, or any other time, for that matter. Your shade space is important – where else would you prefer to enjoy a continental lunch and some ice-cool beverages? Parasols and pergolas are what’s hot here – giving you protection from the sun and a functional place to chill out (literally).

Add some personal touches

Ok, so you’ve put out a few coordinating cushions, throws and rugs to appease style-savvy guests – don’t be afraid to put your touch on things too. Who cares if no one else in the family likes that hideous frog lamp you bought all those years ago? This is your little piece of paradise, so own it.

Take inspiration from your indoor space

Inside and out, mirrors are a fab way to create the illusion of more space. They’ll show off your plant babies’ best angles, and they’re great for breaking  up the monotony of exterior surfaces as well.

Remember that modular sofa we mentioned earlier too? It’s not just for daytime relaxation – simply reconfigure the layout, grab a blanket and set up a projector for a chilled movie night under the stars. Just don’t forget the popcorn.

Set the mood

Lights, candles, action! Tea lights and fairy lights are your best friends for a relaxed, cosy feel, and a citronella candle goes a long way towards keeping the midges and mozzies at bay.

Fancy some flowers? Favourites like roses, snapdragons and jasmine bloom all season long and smell incredible, plus they’re super easy to care for – unlike that orchid you’ve got that’s probably (definitely) seen better days.
