Export facilities & VAT refunds

Export facilities

Goods exported or carried personally out of the country may qualify for a tax refund

Our Export department offers a full range of export facilities and our Partners have considerable expertise in sending consignments all over the world. We'll provide a shipping agent if you wish and deal with the necessary paperwork, as well as process VAT refunds where appropriate.

Please note that we only deliver website orders to selected countries and not everything we sell online is eligible for international delivery. The reasons for this are connected with logistics, legal issues and warranties.

Products affected by such restrictions include electricals, large bulky items, perishables, liquids and flammables.

However, we may still be able to organise a personalised export for you through our specialist service at John Lewis Oxford Street, where we can:

  • consolidate your order for you
  • process diplomatic and BFPO sales
  • arrange shipment of gift lists for newlyweds moving overseas
  • process VAT refunds for you if you live outside the EU

We'll quote for free and when we ship for you, your order will be fully insured. Please note that shipping costs charged by this service will be higher than the cost of delivery offered via the website. If you prefer, we can deliver to your nominated shipper.

Please contact us at export.oxford.street@johnlewis.co.uk

Tax-free shopping FAQs

Our tax-free shopping service allows customers from outside the European Union (EU) to claim back the Value Added Tax (VAT) on purchases from John Lewis.

Who can buy tax-free?

  • Overseas buyers whose domicile or habitual residence is outside the European Union and intend to leave for a destination outside the EU within 3 months
  • UK residents who send goods to friends and family living outside the EU

What do I save?

Non-EU customers may reclaim the VAT included in the purchase price, minus an administrative charge.

What do I save?

A VAT refund can be given on all merchandise except:

  • books
  • most food
  • children's clothes and shoes, as they are VAT-free and therefore not eligible

What restrictions are there?

You must:

  • spend £75 or more in any John Lewis shop
  • travel to a country outside the European Union within 3 months of the first purchase date

How do I claim my refund?

Having completed your shopping, obtain a tax free shopping form from our Export department who will explain the procedure to you. You’ll need to show your receipts and passport.

How is my refund paid?

A cash refund is obtainable from the 'Cash Refund Service' desk situated at most UK airports, or, if you prefer, we can arrange to credit your American Express, Diners Club, JCB (Japanese Credit Bureau), MasterCard, Visa or partnership card. Alternatively, a cheque in any major currency can be sent to you or someone you nominate.

VAT receipts & refunds

To obtain a VAT receipt , sign into your account and then click on the View your order/obtain VAT receipt link.

We’re sorry that we can’t deduct VAT when charging for goods. If you're resident in the Channel Islands and qualify for a VAT refund, please contact Customer Services after your goods have been delivered. We'll then credit the amount of VAT charged.

Customers buying products for delivery to a UK address will be charged UK VAT. If you are having goods delivered direct to a shipping agent in the UK but for immediate export, it may be possible to refund the VAT. You must contact our Export department at export.oxford.street@johnlewis.co.uk before placing an order. If you make an order without notifying us in advance, the UK VAT on your purchase will not be refunded.
