Payment methods

We accept many different types of payment. These include:

  • Partnership Card
  • Visa and MasterCard (including pre-paid cards)
  • Maestro
  • American Express
  • PayPal
  • Apple Pay
  • John Lewis gift card
  • John Lewis gift vouchers
  • Partnership card vouchers
  • money-off coupons
  • One 4 All gift cards 
  • You can use a combination of gift vouchers and any payment card we accept to pay for your order

What's an online credit and how do I use it?

In certain circumstances, for example when you’ve purchased online with a gift voucher or gift card, and make a return via courier, Royal Mail or Collect+, we'll refund the amount owed to you with an online credit.

To use your account credit, simply sign in to your online account when you’re placing your order. Your available credit will be automatically applied to your order, and you just need to deselect it if you don't want to use it yet. You can check your available account credit at any time by signing into your account, and then selecting My Account. There’s no expiry on an online credit.

If you don't yet have an online account, you can create one by using the email address supplied for your most recent order; just follow the instructions on our sign-up page.

If your email address is already registered and you need to reset your password, enter your email address in our forgotten password form and we'll send you an email with instructions.

Do you accept Euros in your shops?

We no longer accept Euros as payment in any of our shops. Payments online must be in sterling unless you shop via one of our international sites. You can select a foreign currency site by clicking on the flag in the top right corner of the screen.

Do you accept Bonus bonds?

Yes, we do accept Bonus bonds in the form of gift cards in our shops. Online, we can only accept bonus bonds as a payment method in the Visa pre-paid gift card format.

Do you accept cheques in your shops?

This is not a routine payment method, but you can request it in our shops in certain circumstances; for example, company orders.

Can I pay by BACS in your shops?

If you are a business you can place your order with the John Lewis for Business team and pay via BACS (a minimum spend applies).


Do you accept PayPal?

Yes, we accept PayPal for all online orders for UK delivery. If you paid online using PayPal and return your item to a John Lewis & Partners shop, we can refund your PayPal account straight away. Please make sure you have your order confirmation or delivery note with you.

If you send your item back to us via a Waitrose & Partners shop, by courier, Royal Mail or Collect+, we'll refund your PayPal account as soon as possible once we receive your return.


Do you accept PayPal for international orders?

We accept PayPal for international orders if you're shopping on our UK website, or on one of our international websites and have opted to pay in GBP. PayPal isn't available if you wish to pay in local currency.

Apple Pay

Do you accept Apple Pay?

Yes, we accept Apple Pay for all online orders for UK delivery. If you paid online using Apple Pay and return your item to a John Lewis & Partners shop, we can refund your Apple Pay account straight away. Please make sure you have your order confirmation or delivery note with you as well as your device account number from your Wallet & Apple Pay.

If you send your item back to us via a Waitrose & Partners shop, by courier, Royal Mail or Collect+, we'll process a refund to your Apple Pay account once we receive your return.


Promotional codes

If you acquire a coupon, discount or promotional discount code offered by, it's valid for use online only at, and not in our shops or by phone, unless otherwise stated.

The following conditions apply:

  • For the promotional code to be valid, a valid product must be added to your basket
  • Only one promotional code can be used per transaction
  • If you have more than one promotional code, you may place separate orders
  • Orders must be made prior to 23:59 hours on the closing date
  • No cash alternative is available
  • All offers are subject to stock availability
  • All other John Lewis & Partners terms and conditions apply

Interest free credit

We offer Interest Free Credit at via Creation Consumer Finance on products in the following departments when you spend £1000 or more:

  • Home (excluding alcohol) and Garden
  • Furniture and Lighting
  • Nursery (excluding clothing)

Simply add the items to your basket and if your items are eligible and meet the minimum spend required, you can choose Interest Free Credit as your payment option at the checkout.

There is a minimum spend of £1,000 required for Interest Free Credit. No deposit is required. ID will be required for the credit application and acceptance is subject to status. Terms and conditions apply. Find out more here,

Payment security

To protect you from fraud when you are shopping online, you may sometimes have to confirm your identity when purchasing an item online or via our app.

You could either be sent a short code when you are making a payment, by text/SMS or email, which you will need to enter to complete the purchase, or use your mobile banking app to confirm that you are the cardholder.

It is important that you keep your mobile phone number and contact details up to date with your bank or card provider. This will ensure that you will be able to make that online purchase if your bank or card provider wants to check that it is you using the card to make the payment.  

If you cannot complete a purchase using your card to shop on our website or in our app then please contact your card issuer for assistance.

Why has my payment been refused?

Please contact your card issuer for details on why your card was declined.

I've used the wrong credit card for my order - can I change the payment method?

Once your order has been placed, we’re unable to change your payment method. You would need to cancel your order immediately (before it is despatched from the warehouse), and then place it again using your preferred payment method. In order to cancel an order, please contact our Customer services team on 03456 049 049  7am - 11pm, 7 days a week.

When will I be charged for my order?

For most products sent directly from our warehouse, your credit/debit card will be charged when your order is placed.  If the product is being delivered direct to you from a supplier, for instance in the case of larger products such as electrical appliances and furniture, you may be charged at any point between confirmation of your order and despatch.

Please note that if you choose to pay by PayPal, your payment will be taken immediately.
