Gabrielle Chanel grew up in a convent. She was taught to sew by the nuns using the plain black and white fabrics available to the sisters. As a young woman alone in Paris she became a seamstress to support herself and earned a little extra by singing in a fashionable bar. It was here that she gained her nickname Coco. With the help of a wealthy friend, she was able to rent her own small shop in Paris where she created beautiful tailored suits and fitted dresses for chic Parisian Society.
