By the end of 1886, Vincent Van Gogh no longer had the finances to pay for models to sit for his paintings. Instead, he started to produce floral still lives. This new subject encouraged Van Gogh to experiment with brighter colours and an impressionist style of painting. 'Vase with Gladioli and Chinese Asters' demonstrates his ability to work with contrasting colours, positioning red flowers against a light blue background whilst using softer, less rigid brush strokes.

Vincent Van Gogh was born in Holland in 1853. In 1888 he settled in Arles in Provence, where he was visited by Gauguin and painted his now-famous series of 'Sunflowers'. In the following year, a nervous breakdown brought him to a sanatorium at Saint-Rémy. It was during this period that he executed 'A Wheatfield, with Cypresses'. The traumas of his life, documented in his letters, have tended to dominate and distort modern perceptions of his art but the appreciation of his craft as a Post-Impressionist painter continues to grow.
