Our specialist Partners in the Technology department (available in most shops), are here to take the hassle out of setting up your new tablet, smartwatch or fitness tracker. With smartphone, laptop or desktop set-ups, we can transfer data from your existing device if you are upgrading. We also offer support services for existing devices to ensure they are working at their best.

In Store

Our Technical Support Partners can complete 3 types of services in your local John Lewis & Partners, to both new and existing devices, and some of the services can be completed the same day.

Quick Set-Up

After purchasing a new technology product from John Lewis & Partners, our Technical Support team can assist and take the hassle out of setting up the device for you, meaning when you take your new tech away it will be ready to use straight away.

What we'll do

  • Set up a user account, creating an initial passcode access

  • Installation of any available operating system updates

  • Download historic apps, if applicable

  • Log into a maximum of 2 existing accounts on the relevant apps, for example email or music accounts

  • 15-minute demonstration of a new device with a Technical Support Partner, if required -  camera, touch ID access, pre-installed apps, sharing files with other tablets, using a tablet with other devices, security and privacy settings

Smartwatch set-up

What we'll do

  • Create a new user account with the relevant smartwatch or fitness tracker brand

  • Installation of any available operating system updates

  • Sync with 1 compatible device, for example, smartphone, tablet or laptop, and download app, if applicable

  • 15-minute demonstration of the new device with a Technical Support Partner, if required - inputting wellbeing details, features and benefits of using a smartwatch with a synced device eg. smartphone

  • Set up a maximum of 2 user accounts

  • Installation of manufacturer updates or operating system updates available

  • Configure or create a maximum 2 email accounts, if required

  • Activate and update pre-installed antivirus software

  • Set up inbuilt parental controls, if required

  • 15-minute demonstration of the new device with a Technical Support Partner, if required - privacy and security settings, how to personalise the device, using a laptop or PC with other devices, basic maintenance advice

Advanced laptop or desktop set-up

  • Set up of an Apple or Windows device 

  • Set up a maximum 2 user accounts

  • Installation of manufacturer updates or operating system updates available

  • Configure or create a maximum of 2 email accounts, if required

Before you buy

To complete the process as efficiently as possible, please have the following correct existing login details with you:

  • Username and password for 2 existing email accounts\

For the data transfer from an existing laptop or desktop:

  • Please bring your current Apple or Windows laptop or PC to transfer the data across

  • Please prepare the files/data to be transferred and have them already organised into folders for clarity and ease. If the transfer is from a Linux device then please transfer the files to a harddrive or cloud service ahead of time.

  • Data transfer is completed via a hard drive that is sold separately, or you can provide your own if storage is sufficient

Service duration can be up to 48 hours, depending on the quantity of the data being transferred, software updates and provision of correct passwords required. Our Technical Support Team will contact you when the service has been completed.

Smooth running

We can support with ensuring your current laptop or desktop is always running at its best with our support services listed below. If you are looking to upgrade your device, we also offer help with ensuring your data is either backed up correctly or wiped if you are trading it in.

What we'll do

  • Back up all system and data files from an existing tablet, laptop or desktop to an external hard drive, which is sold separately

Before you buy

  • This service may be recommended prior to a laptop or desktop being sent away for a repair, to ensure no valuable data is impacted during other ongoing support services

  • If this service is completed before being sent away for a repair, we will send the goods directly to the repair agent once the back up has been completed

  • A data backup can be completed on desktops, laptops or tablets that have not been purchased from John Lewis & Partners

  • Data backup is completed via a hard drive that is sold separately, or you can provide your own if storage is sufficient

Service duration can be up to 48 hours, depending on the quantity of the data being backed up from the device. Our Technical Support Team will contact you when the service has been completed.

Easy fixes

If the worst should happen, no matter how well you look after your device, we’ll work to help get your valuable data retrieved and smartphone screens replaced. These services can be completed for devices out of warranty or if they have not been purchased from John Lewis & Partners, to help get things back on track.

Data recovery

What we'll do

Rescue or retrieve lost personal data and store it on a new external storage device, which is included in the price

  • Our data recovery service is divided into three tiers: Standard, Advanced, and Complex. If your device requires physical or specialist repairs to successfully recover your files, you may need to upgrade to a higher tier. You will be consulted ahead of continuing on with this work

  • Please bring your device into your local store to be booked in by our Technical Support Partners. We will return your device to the same store after it has been completed

  • Once the data recovery has been completed and returned to the store, you will be sent a secure password to access your encrypted, recovered data

  • Our data recovery service is available for the following products, regardless of where they were purchased:

    • Laptops

    • External hard drives

    • PC/Mac

    • USB sticks

    • SD memory cards (SD/SDHC)

    • Tablets and iPads

    • Smartphones and iPhones

    • Server/RAID Systems

    • SSD drives (Solid State Drives)

Before you buy

  • If your device is affected by any of the following issues, we suggest that you leave it switched off ahead of a data recovery service, so as not to risk further data loss

    • Computer will not start up

    • Unusual noise/clicking sound or head failure

    • Power surge/outage

    • Virus/spyware

    • Impact trauma

    • Fire or water damage

    • Deleted files

    • Corrupted data

Service duration can be 7-10 days, including transport of the device to and from the approved servicer, but may take longer depending on repairs required to the device. Our technical support team will contact you when the service has been completed.
