Choosing the right mattress for you

What kind of sleeper am I?

The most important factor to consider when sleeping is spine alignment. You want to achieve a neutral spine exactly the same as when you sit or stand correctly - therefore choosing the correct tension for the right support is crucial.

MATTRESS FOR FRONT SLEEPERS

You’ll usually need a mattress with more support so there are fewer gaps between your body and the mattress. The aim is to maintain a neutral position in your spine and neck - consider going without a pillow if necessary.

MATTRESS FOR SIDE SLEEPERS

You’ll need a softer spring to allow your shoulders and hips to sink into the mattress, keeping the spine straight without causing pressure points on the joints.

MATTRESS FOR BACK SLEEPERS

Check that the tension of the mattress allows the bed to cushion right into your lower back so there’s no gap. Try sliding a hand underneath the base of your spine; if it’s easy to do, the mattress may be too firm; if there is no room, the mattress may be too soft and not giving you the right support.

Mattress Tension Guide

Spring tensions of a mattress are usually described as soft, medium or firm. This can give the impression that the mattress will feel this way. In fact, these three tensions are directly linked to your body weight on the mattress and the size of the chosen mattress. You can check the tension of your mattress to see if it’s too soft or too firm for your sleep needs.

SOFT TENSION MATTRESS

Suitable for bodyweights up to
8 stone (50kg)

MEDIUM TENSION MATTRESS

Suitable for bodyweights of
8-16 stone (50kg-100kg)

FIRM TENSION MATTRESS

Optimum comfort for bodyweights over 16 stone (100kg+)

ZIP-AND-LINK MATTRESSES

For additional versatility, the zip-and-link mattresses are two separate mattresses that you can zip together to create a full bed or keep them unzipped for use as two separate beds instead. This is perfect for more compact spaces since each mattress can be rotated individually each season and makes delivery easier if you have a small hallway.

Split-tension mattresses are ideal for couples who prefer different levels of firmness since sleepers can choose different tensions for either side of the mattress. This means couples can maintain their individual comfort needs if their mattress preferences or tensions are different. They can also create independent sleep surfaces which reduce disturbance from the other person during sleep

GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR MATTRESS

1 - Your mattress may have compressed slightly during transportation, this is perfectly normal, and it will soon resume its natural shape and size

2 - If you have purchased a roll-up mattress, please ensure that it is unrolled and placed within its cover on a bed in a warm room for 24 hours before use, to allow it to regain its normal shape

3 - Ensure the room is well-ventilated and leave the covers on the bed pulled back during the day for the first few weeks - that way the naturally occurring smell from natural fillings will dissipate

4 - Choose free delivery within a few days or opt for mattress next day delivery from £19.95

5 - Once unwrapped, leave the mattress uncovered for a few hours to let it breathe

6 - You may notice a slight odour after the mattress has been taken out of its packaging - the fillings will occasionally release a smell but it is no cause for concern and will dissipate once the mattress has been well aired

7 - Your new mattress may feel slightly different and strange at first, so please allow time for your body to adjust and for the fillings to settle

8 - Air your mattress for 4 hours after delivery to freshen and remove any odour from storage

MATTRESS CARE (aftercare)

  • Rotate your double-sided mattress head to foot and turn it over completely once a fortnight for the first 12 weeks, then once a month (single-sided mattresses don’t need to be turned)
  • Rotate latex and memory foam mattresses through 180 degrees monthly
  • Air your mattress on a weekly basis by turning back the bed linen for a few hours after you get up
  • Use a mattress protector or an under blanket below the sheet
  • If you want to wash a mattress or clean a memory foam mattress, you can clean it every few months with a soft brush, do not vacuum as this can damage the filling
  • Clean spills with a dry cloth, then sponge with a slightly damp cloth and a mild detergent solution
