Beat the back to school rush – essential school uniform for you to top up on for the spring and summer terms

At last, a date for when children in the UK go back to school. The majority of kids and parents around the land are now counting the days/hours/minutes till 8 March. Who knew we all loved school so much? The biggest conundrum now, though, is how to stock up on uniform that fits for just a term and a bit. Follow our top tips to pass the test.

Feet first

As painful as it might be to admit, some children will have outgrown the barely-worn school shoes which were bought back in August or September of last year. Start by checking their shoe size at home – How to measure kids feet at home has all the tips you’ll need for how to do it. Once you know, check with your school what their footwear policy is. Some schools may offer children the flexibility of being able to return in other shoes that still fit them. 'If your school will allow it, go for a more versatile casual shoe such as a trainer,' says Sian Griffiths, Partner & Assistant Buyer, Kids. 'This way you get better value for money as they can be worn both in and outside the classroom.' If proper school shoes are required, however, then look for more affordable, lightweight styles.

Socks and accessories

New term, new socks. It’s amazing how a bright white pair of knee-highs can make a whole uniform look fresh. Add in some crisp new underwear and kids will feel smart and ready to learn. It’s funny how the little things can make a big difference when it comes to confidence in the classroom. If you are looking for more top tips on buying uniform, refer to our schoolwear buying guide.

Shirts and blouses

If their winter uniform is looking a bit drab and ill-fitting, you may need to top up on spring/summer shirts or blouses. 'We offer a great range of affordable shirts and blouses, long sleeve and short. We have also seen a trend on our multipack polos for a more transitional piece of working from home into going back to school,' says Lucy Hewson, Partner & Assistant Buyer, Schoolwear. Remember to get the details right – does your child prefer Velcro-fastening or buttons? Long or short sleeves? Crisp cotton or easy iron? Small features like this can matter a lot as your child prepares to return to school.

Skirts and trousers

Check the styles you already have as many John Lewis school trousers and skirts can be let down to give more length, which might just tide you over until the end of the summer term. And remember, many schools switch to summer uniform for the final term so they might only need skirts and trousers till the Easter holiday before making the change to shorts and summer dresses for the remainder of the school year.
