If you’re jetting off for the bank holiday, keep things simple with a capsule wardrobe

Three days, nine meals, endless exploration… long weekends away sound idyllic, until it comes to the packing part. Armed with a tiny suitcase and countless scenarios, there’s only one solution: a capsule wardrobe. Essentially an edit of interchangeable separates, pack wisely and you can eke out four different outfits from just a few items of clothing. Here’s how:

Beige suit and navy shirt

Travel in a lightweight, casual suit and navy shirt, and wear your blazer through check-in so you don’t have to pack a heavy coat in your cabin bag. Keep the look modern with crisp white trainers.

Whether you’re sun-seeking or sightseeing, you can’t go wrong with camel shorts and a stripy tee. Limiting yourself to just a couple of colours, like tones of blue and beige, guarantees versatility. With this in mind, a denim jacket is the perfect daytime layer.

When it comes to accessories, a baseball cap is the space-saving hat of choice and useful if you’re headed somewhere hot. Ditto sunglasses. Don’t forget a rucksack for your camera and water bottle – pick a relatively neutral style and hopefully your holiday partner will shoulder some of the burden (literally).

Wondering just how a handful of pieces will get you through a weekend without feeling like you’re wearing a uniform? Short-sleeve shirts layered over plain tees will update your outfit instantly.

Regardless of where it is you’re going, you’ll always be grateful for a crew-neck jumper. Dinners alfresco can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace when you’re sporting the right gear and will work with shorts, or for a more sophisticated spin, trousers.
