2020 vision: the new decade trends worth buying into

2020 fashion trends

Your cheatsheet to the best fashion trends heading our way in the Twenties

The reboot button has been firmly pressed, igniting a fresh new start and a total reset for your wardrobe. But how to get your look in shape for the decade that awaits? From the palette set to see you through the seasons to inspired new silhouettes, your kickstarter project begins now. Here’s a guide to the 2020 trends with enduring appeal.

Earth angels

As the fashion world continues with its plans to lessen its environmental impact, the use of vegetable based dyes will soar. A renewed appreciation for earthy hues – see terracotta, khaki and avocado – will be the result of this development. Embrace it early with neutral tones such as olive green and butterscotch. This palette looks glorious with heritage fabrics such as tweed and corduroy.

Stay abreast of the issue

Thanks to a surge in lower necklines, and the realisation that the female body is a worthy recipient of some serious self-celebration, cleavage is a very much back on the style agenda. Certainly, it’s a decade for women to reclaim their femininity. Low-flying necklines may be too much for wallflowers but this revealing moment can be embraced in a whole variety of ways. Teaming a low-cut cami with a pair of wide-leg jeans is a great option. Experimenting with a V-neck print is also a good idea.

Bright futures

Lime green, fuchsia and an unapologetic shade of zesty orange will give the Twenties a blast of colour. An early hit on the catwalks – see Christopher Kane, Versace and Max Mara – neon finds a new sophistication for this decade with vibrant evening wear set to become a regular fixture. An easy way to embrace this trend is via accessories – a tangerine sandal is a fine companion for a little black dress while a sunny bucket bag gives life to an ordinary black coat.

Meet the power puff girls

Awards season began in earnest last week with a Golden Globes red carpet that was the most volumnius in the event’s history. The resurgence of the oversized sleeve was the root and cause of this boost in volume. Following years of Nineties slip dresses and minimalist silhouettes, this supersized-sleeve renaissance is set to grab us by the shoulders. Embrace it now with casualwear tops – exaggerated details can be dialed down with denim – or neat fitting sweaters. Big sleeves are the new shoulder pads.

Trench town

A well-cut trench coat is more fashion veteran than hot new trend, but the coat is set for stratospheric success in 2020. Not least because it’s loaded with opportunity – new takes on the classic see the humble trench recast as everything from sophisticated eveningwear to easygoing streetwear. Take your lead from the design world and opt for one that’s as adaptable as you are. Oversized styles look great layered over sportswear while something in a heavy-duty fabric radiates elegance.

Practically speaking

Sportswear might feel like a hangover from the last decade – with athleisure still a mainstay in our wardrobes – but fashion with a practical edge will never go past its sell-by date. Consider function in the same breath that you do form. Rain boots that look as good as they feel are a fine example (worn with boyfriend jeans and slub socks), as is the perfect pair of office-approved track pants.
