Forget saving your best dresses for special events. Instead, make like the Bridgerton maximalist crowd and start dressing up, for staying in...

Hands up if evening sessions bingeing on Bridgerton under the comfort of a blanket is the one thing getting you through this sudden return to winter we’re experiencing? You’re not alone: viewing figures from the debut weekend of the second season of the Regency-era series have broken records, making it the most-watched Netflix English-language TV title in the streamer’s history.

Yes, we’re tuning in for the drama and riveting plotline, but the maximalist sets, blinging jewellery and opulent costumes provide plenty of escapism, too. And while we’re yet to entertain donning an empire line, satin gown to the next wedding in the calendar, the aristos’ off-duty ensembles – AKA frothy house dresses – are something we can get on board with.

Shirred bodices, loose sleeves and even floatier waistlines lend themselves to an updated take on the house dress, a comfy, feel-good frock to wear when you’re staying in-in or working from home. This Regency-style aesthetic has captured the mood of many brands, from Albaray and Finery to new, must-see label o.p.t. For full effect, accessorise with afternoon tea from a porcelain cup and co-ordinating saucer.

Of course these dresses are made for going out in, too – and, it being 2022, it won’t cause a society scandal if you run into someone you know wearing something other than your Sunday best. Happy days.
