Content creator, author and podcast host Louise Boyce (@mamastillgotit_) on reclaiming your career, top parenting tips and what she’ll treat herself to if she survives the summer holidays
Louise’s wish list
You have such a unique talent because you transform the everyday experiences of motherhood into laugh-out-loud sketches - how do you decide which ideas make the cut?
It’s genuinely things that happen to me because there are hilarious moments everywhere in life. My husband knows now, he’ll do something and then he’ll look at me and say, ‘you’re going to make a sketch about that aren’t you?’ I did a sketch yesterday mocking my mother who thinks she’s helpful with the children but she’s not at all - in fact she’s often ‘busy’ when I ask for help during the summer holidays.
Tell us a little about who you are and how you started in the world of content creation?
I’m a mum of three and my background is fashion modelling. After 15 years as a model, I had my first child and was told my work was finished. So Mama Still Got It came from a place of anger when I was at rock bottom - women don’t lose their personalities when we have babies and most of us still have to work. I started the blog and Instagram account and then Covid hit, so I started making comedy sketches about how hard motherhood was during that period. It really resonated with people and from there it evolved into a book and a podcast. Parenting is hard and there are moments of sheer and utter hard work but you’re not alone and I feel I’ve made a community that helps each other to realise if you don’t laugh you’ll cry, so we have to laugh!
Much of what you stand by is trying not to lose yourself to motherhood and still looking and feeling like yourself. What are your favourite self-care tips/tricks?
I go to the gym whenever I can and I am very big on my baths. My family knows that when mama is in the bathtub, you do not disturb her. I make it an event with candles, wine and my ipad so I can watch something on Netflix.
I am also a big believer in meeting up with your girlfriends, having wine and having a rant. A good circle of girlfriends is like having therapists. For me, self care is being with other like-minded women.
And lastly, retail therapy. Whether it’s in store or online, who doesn’t like to treat themselves to something.
What’s your go-to outfit for when you don’t have time but want to feel put together?
In this heatwave I’ve been living in summer dresses, but generally I’ll grab a cute pair of jeans and a nice top. I’m all about the accessories, I really think you can make any outfit look good with the right accessories: nice chunky necklace, earrings, sunglasses of course, and a nice bag. If it’s colder outside I really love a nice trench coat.
When was the last time you treated yourself or someone else and what did you buy?
I bought myself a bottle of Escentric Molecules perfume and I love it. It’s a beautiful one and I can’t really smell it on myself but everyone else can, which is apparently a sign of a great perfume.
Lots of parents are currently juggling work and the school holidays - do you have any tips on how to balance the juggle?
Ask for help. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your mum friends and ask if anyone can help for a couple of hours while you do a Zoom call or finish a deadline. They say it takes a village and it really does so think of your friends as the village - my sister has my kids right now while I’m on this shoot. Also don’t be afraid of them being ‘bored’. That’s the time they get creative - they can build something, write something, play in the garden or make a den. It’s impossible to always keep your kids entertained all the time. It’s not realistic.
What are your top tips for travelling with the kids, and which key products do you pack every time?
For younger children, one of the best things I ever did was get a Stokke Yoyo pushchair. My other hack is Beach Powder, which gets rid of sand immediately – it’s truly phenomenal, especially as it means you don’t come home with a ton of sand in your suitcase.
What does the rest of the year look like for you?
Excitingly, we’re finalising plans for some more live events for No Parental Guidance, starting in October. We had our first event earlier this year, and it was such a special experience to be able to sit in a room with so many of our community, sharing all these personal and hilarious stories around parenting and womanhood.
