I’m giving my house an autumn refresh with good mood lighting, cosy throws and the ultimate fragrance finds
The season of the witch is here, and with it come shorter days, longer nights and an unquenchable thirst for anything pumpkin-spice flavoured. While some may be mourning the loss of daylight, warmth and general sense of wellbeing, I am excited to embrace October in all its autumnal glory (aside from spiders, sorry, you’re not part of the plan).
My tips? Get your lighting right by adding soft-focus side lights to your living room, festoon your place with blankets and burn some citronella to keep unwanted visitors (spiders) at bay.
Indoor lighting
Unless you’re a spider, no one wants to live shrouded in complete darkness. Instead of adding megawatt bulbs to all of my Big Lights™ to combat the clock change, I’ll lean into the shadows by adding these amazing ribbed glass wall lights to my living room alongside this mid-century-esque floor lamp to create the perfect low-level ambient setting. Ideal for evening box-set binges.

I’m having a bit of a mustard moment right now. Think of the colour in question as more like a grown-up dijon, as opposed to a bright Colman’s. While both work well in a ham sandwich, the dijon variety looks better in my living room. Cushions are the easiest way to transform a space, so I’ll be throwing in a couple of these plush velvet stripe cushions, and upgrading my seating with this supremely comfortable Swoon ottoman.
Fragrance
October is the month I do my annual candle audit (I know). Did any wax survive my obsessive burning from last winter? Probably not, which is why I’m stocking up on one fancy Le Labo classic along with this longer-lasting Verden reed diffuser, which throws out a warming woody scent 24/7.
