Brand information
The Cross Pen Company is the oldest pen manufacturer in America. It was established in Providence, Rhode Island in 1846 by Richard Cross and Edward W. Bradbury, who began making gold and silver casings for wooden pencils. Thanks to Richard’s son Alonzo Townsend Cross, the company became well known for their innovative products. They created their first fountain pen - the “Peerless” - in 1889 and in 1916 were bought by Walter R. Boss, whose family remained connected to the company until only recently.
Innovation didn’t stop, however. They gained a reputation for producing personalised gifts and in 1953 began manufacturing ballpoint pens. In 1991 their Townsend line of pens, names in honour of Alonzo Cross, was introduced. Inspired by the company’s 1938 Art Deco pen, it’s known as the ‘Pen of U.S. Presidents’.
In 1996 the company commissioned a bell from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, Britain’s oldest manufacturing company, as a 150th anniversary gift to the Smithsonian Institute, in Washington D.C.
