Edward Hopper was an American realist painter and printmaker and was a minor-key artist, creating subdued drama out of commonplace subjects that invited narrative interpretations. As a mature artist, Hopper spent most of his summers on Cape Cod, a peninsula in Massachusetts. He designed and built a sunny secluded studio overlooking the water. The view in 'Rooms by the Sea' resembles what Hopper would have seen out of the back door of his studio. Like most of his images, the scene seems to be realistic, abstract, and surrealist all at once.
