Wu Yuanyu (c. 11th century) was a Chinese painter from the Northern Song dynasty. He was known for painting birds, animals and flowers in a detailed and natural style. He studied under the famous painter Cui Bai, who influenced his approach to painting nature.
Wu worked for the imperial court and became a respected artist. He is also believed to have influenced Emperor Huizong, who was interested in flower-and-bird painting.
Although few of Wu Yuanyu’s original paintings survive, his compositions inspired later artists. Swan and Cygnets is believed to be based on one of his works and shows his influence on Chinese flower-and-bird painting (huaniao).
