- The Areca palm likes a well-lit spot but not direct sunlight. Direct sun can cause the leaves to brown. The soil should be kept slightly moist. Areca palms should be watered once a week and don't forget that they love to be misted to keep their leaves fresh and green. Underwatering can cause dried leaves and brown leaf tips. In general, although they should be kept moist do not let them sit in water.
