The inspiration:

"It is today’s black. I always enliven black with gold, through buttons, belts and chains," said Yves Saint Laurent. A memory of his sun-filled childhood in Oran, no collection escaped the couturier’s 'golden' touch.

The very first piece he showed on the runway in his own name was a pea coat adorned with gold buttons. The warm metallic colour lent its dazzling brilliance to brocade, lace, lamé, sequins, leather, and embroidery. Evening pieces that seemed entirely sculpted out of gold, like the gleaming, goddess-draped, cut-out gown from Yves Saint Laurent’s autumn/winter 1991/1992.
