Supporting our communities

Our aims

We're proud of the close links we forge between our Partners and local schools, charities and organisations. And wherever we do business, at home or abroad, we work with communities to make a difference. That's why:

  • Our Community Matters programme in our shops continues to support local charities and community groups.
  • We aim to give at least 1% of pre-tax profits to community initiatives.
  • We will continue to seek out projects that support the John Lewis Foundation at home and abroad.

If you'd like to nominate a good cause for Community Matters please complete the nomination form and take it to the Customer Services department.

The charities we're supporting from February 2017 – April 2017 are:

  • Friends of the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra
  • Muscial education for students at schools and colleges in Hampshire by providing financial support to the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra, the String Orchestra and the Percussion Ensemble.
Our donation will help to purchase muscial instruments and help towards the cost of concerts.
  • U Support Children's Charity
  • U Supoprt has provided over 20,000 disabled and disadvantaged children with life limiting illnesses the opportunity to attend various sporting cultural and leisure events.
Our donation would enable even more children the opportunity to experience an event they could only dream of.
  • The Compass School
  • This is the only school in Southampton to provide education and behavioural support for key stage 1-4 pupils unable to access mainstream school due to social, emotional or mental health needs.
Our donation would be used to help develop, recreate and update existing recreational areas both inside and out of the school building.

This is how November 2016 - January 2017 Community Matters' charities benefited from being part of the scheme:

  • The Blue Lamp Trust - The Bobby Scheme received £865
  • Hannah's Holiday Home Appeal received £1258
  • Local Men cap Eastleigh Borough and Romsey received £877

John Lewis foundation

Since the introduction of the law requiring retailers to charge for single-use carrier bags, our charity, the John Lewis Foundation, has been responsible for distributing the proceeds to UK charities. We’ve aimed to choose charities closely aligned with the principles of the Foundation, supporting activities that promote education and inclusion, and enable employment. We’re sharing the past year’s proceeds of over £155,000 between six charities.
