What size TV do I need?
First things first, you need to work out what size TV will work in your space. Too big and you’ll give yourself a headache, too small and you’ll be kicking yourself that you can’t see the details.
It’s easy to do: simply work out where you want the TV and measure the distance from there to where you’ll be watching. As a rule of thumb these are the recommended sizes per viewing distances:
Small TVs
If you have less than 1.5-metres’ space from the TV, opt for a TV size between 24-32 inches. For a smaller space, like the kids’ playroom or the garden office, this size is perfect for you.
Medium TVs
If you have 1.5-2 metres space from the TV, opt for a TV between 39-46 inches. These are the most common sizes for living rooms and are easy to wall mount.
Large TVs
If you have 2-3 metres space from the TV, opt for a TV size between 47-55 inches. Larger rooms can accommodate TVs of this size and are a great way to really immerse yourself in what you’re watching.
Huge TVs
If you have more than 3 metres space from the TV, opt for a TV size over 56 inches. These big screens make for excellent sports viewing parties.
What screen technology is best?
If you don’t know your OLED from your RGB, check out our glossary below. If you’d like more detail or information on any of these, our expert Partners in-store will happily explain more.
RGB
RGB TV backlighting is the newest tech in the TV world and is shaping the next generation of TVs and displays. The key lies in how the screen is lit.
Traditional LED TVs rely on white or blue lights as a backlight, whereas RGB uses dedicated red, green and blue LED backlights; these provide exceptional colour accuracy and brightness compared to traditional white-based backlight systems. This results in purer, more accurate colours, higher brightness and reduced light leakage for a superior contrast.
LED
LED TVs use Light-Emitting Diodes to illuminate the screen from behind. This allows them to produce strong contrast, deep blacks and vibrant colours to help images really stand out.
They’re also slim and pretty energy efficient, which makes them a great choice for everyday viewing.
OLED
OLED TVs take things a step further thanks to Organic Light Emitting Diode technology – simply put, it’s where each individual pixel emits its own light.
This delivers incredibly dark blacks, virtually limitless contrast and really vivid colours, along with exceptional sharpness. Because there’s no need for a backlight, OLED screens can also be ultra-thin and handle motion more smoothly.
QLED
QLED TVs use Quantum Dot technology, which is designed to enhance the colour and brightness on your screen – so you can sit in any seat and get a great view.
You’ll get a wider colour range – often over a billion shades – and a really vibrant, punchy picture overall, making everything from films to sports look more dynamic and realistic. These TVs also have ambient modes that can display artwork or content on your screen when it’s dormant.
Mini LED
Mini LED TVs pack thousands of tiny LEDs into the backlight, allowing for more precise control over brightness and contrast. This improved local dimming creates a more detailed and dynamic picture, making these models especially well-suited to movies, gaming and fast-paced sports.
Neo QLED
Thanks to Quantum Matrix Technology, Neo QLED TVs have four times the number of pixels than HD TVs, giving supreme colour contrast and unsurpassable clarity – you’ll literally feel like you’re standing next to Sir David Attenborough. They also have incredible sound quality.
Lifestyle TVs
Lifestyle TVs are designed to blend seamlessly into your home rather than dominate it – think screens that look like artwork – or models built to handle the elements, with weather resistance and anti-glare screens for outdoor viewing.
Their sleek designs can sit flush against walls, with most offering 4K or Ultra HD resolution so you’ll still get stunning picture quality for everything you watch.
Projectors
Projectors give you the chance to have a screen of up to 100inches or more on any wall or flat surface while taking up minimal space. Most options offer a Smart TV experience that you can enjoy beyond the walls of your home.
For the ultimate in picture quality, you can opt for a 4K projector or one that offers Full HD, produced by the tech brands you trust.
What is screen resolution?
Put simply, the more pixels your TV has, the higher the resolution, which means a better picture quality.
HD Ready TVs
Most TVs are HD Ready and offer 1280 x 720 pixels. Expect better colour definition and improved resolution for sharper detail.
Full HD TVs
The next step up from HD is Full HD, which offers 1920x1080 pixels, resulting in a richer viewing experience with sharp and crisp resolution.
4K Ultra HD TVs
With four times the quality of Full HD, 4K TVs have 3840x2160 pixel resolution so, even viewed close up, you’re guaranteed stunning realism, natural motion and incredible detail.
8K Ultra HD TVs
The ultimate viewing experience, 8K TVs have 7680x4320 pixel resolution for a flawless picture. State-of-the-art technology will upscale anything you’re watching to 8K resolution for outstanding quality and clarity.

Other TV features
Refresh rate
This is how many times per second the image on the screen updates. Measured in Hertz (Hz), higher numbers (such as 120Hz) provide smoother motion, reducing blur and choppiness, which is great for viewing fast-paced action in gaming or when watching sports – such as the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Tuner
If you’re watching live TV the tuner is how your TV receives signals so you can watch without being connected to the internet. Not all TVs have tuners any more; if you want access to Freeview or Freesat make sure you opt for a model that features one.
Freeview, Freesat and Freely
AI
Most TVs now have AI built in to help with everything from adjusting brightness and correcting content so it looks as sharp as possible, to fine-tuning audio to make dialogue sound clearer so you don’t have to keep adjusting the sound.
Some also have voice-activated options so you can easily find what you’re looking for by speaking into the remote control. These features make it easier for you to navigate menus because the TV will learn your habits.
HDMI cables
Make sure you check the TV you want to buy is compatible with other tech you already have, such as soundbars, Blu-Ray players and gaming consoles.
Essential TV accessories and set up
Invest in home cinema gear to create the ultimate viewing experience. Because new TVs are slimmer than ever before, some built-in speakers have less output.
You can easily enhance sound quality by investing in a sleek soundbar to bring clear, deep and balanced surround sound to your space.
We can also help with a wide range of wall mounts and TV stands to help you get the best from whatever TV you buy.
