THE QUINTESSENTIAL COUNTRYSIDE JACKET GETS A HIGH-FASHION MAKEOVER AS BARBOUR JOINS FORCES WITH STYLE ICON AND DESIGNER ALEXA CHUNG
‘It truly is a match made in outerwear heaven,’ says Clare Surplice, Partner & Buyer, of the hotly anticipated union between Alexa Chung’s eponymous brand ALEXACHUNG and Barbour. Indeed, the fruits of the collaboration are an impeccable mix of quality British craftsmanship and zeitgeist fashion, in a collection of coats and jackets that will have its owners pining for inclement weather.
‘Alexa has been wearing Barbour since she was a child, so the collaboration felt like a genuine fit,’ says Clare. Alexa agrees. ‘Some of my happiest memories have unfolded in a Barbour. The smell of the wax alone makes me feel like I’m home,’ she says.
Said memories undoubtedly include Glastonbury, where Barbour jackets have regularly featured as part of Alexa’s much-coveted attire. This year’s festival provided the perfect opportunity to showcase the new collection, including the longline Glenda jacket in stone, which is lined with gingham and features a contrast collar, and the Patch wax jacket. The latter is Clare’s favourite piece. ‘The idea of using three different wax colours to create this timeless jacket felt truly heritage in nature, yet modern at the same time,’ she explains.
“These pieces are timeless and so easy to wear. A Barbour jacket is a jacket for life”
Alexa’s personal style has been internationally revered since she landed on TV screens presenting Channel 4’s Popworld in the mid-noughties. A regular on best-dressed lists, Mulberry named its hugely successful satchel after her in 2009, cementing her status as a style icon.
After collaborating with various brands over the years, she founded her ALEXACHUNG label in London in 2016 and presents her collections during London Fashion Week.
The two-year collaboration with Barbour also extends to accessories – the Bez waterproof bucket hat is a nod to the 90s and takes its name from the Happy Mondays performer, while the Stanley tote features Barbour’s signature quilting.
Clare is excited about bringing the range to John Lewis & Partners. ‘These pieces are timeless and so easy to wear throughout the seasons. They’ll never date and will complete any outfit. A Barbour jacket is a jacket for life.’
