Panasonic Microwave & Air Fryer review

Living in a small flat, as a keen cook, I was starting to feel overwhelmed by my appliances - an airfryer, microwave and toaster as separate pieces take up crucial worktop space. So enters this Panasonic machine which combines microwave, air fryer, oven and grill - all in one. A neat, but generous appliance, with serious cooking power behind it.

What is the Microwave with Air Fryer?

The Panasonic NN-CD88 combines a microwave, air fryer, grill, and convection oven in one space-saving appliance.

This isn’t a small, novelty contraption though - with a 34L capacity and an extra-large 360mm turntable, it’s perfect for avid cooks and can help feed the family/ It offers the space to cook oil-free with the three-heat air fryer function, whilst the convection and grill functions let you bake, roast, and grill with even heat.

In terms of the microwave power, the Genius Sensor technology ensures effortless reheating, while Inverter Technology delivers precise, even cooking and defrosting without hot spots.

What makes it so special?

The fact that one machine can do all of the above, and do each element so well makes this a kitchen hero. It is larger than a standard microwave - so you will need a dedicated spot in the kitchen, but its volume is only a positive thing in terms of performance.

The room inside the appliance allows you to crisp, fry, bake, grill and reheat your food of choice with enough space around it, allowing for air flow that delivers the best, most evenly cooked results. You don’t feel like you’re sacrificing across any setting. In fact, I haven’t seen a standalone air fryer with one basket of this size. I cooked a block of tofu in it, and it crisped up beautifully with the space, and generous gap between the microwave floor and bottom of the basket.  You also get the benefit of the microwave’s spin, even on other settings, meaning you get an even cook that you wouldn’t get in a standard air fryer, oven or grill, due to its rotation.

It also feels rather luxurious to use the microwave and not have a plate almost touching the door. I found the generosity meant things reheated much quicker and efficiently.

The oven setting surprised me too. Having already a built-in oven, I didn’t anticipate I would use it, but decided to put it to the test with a sourdough focaccia. It baked the bread well, and I found having an oven at eye-level, to keep close to its progress throughout, really enjoyable. You perhaps wouldn’t be able to cook a Sunday roast for a crowd in it, but for batch bakes it performed brilliantly..

The instructions were on scannable QR code on the box, and were comprehensive, showing you how to get the most out of the appliance, and what combination of equipment to use for each setting (it comes with a glass plate, metal roaster, raised grill platter and air fryer basket).. The microwave itself though is so simple to use, after a few skims of the instructions and a play around with the buttons, I found I was on my way.

Is it worth it?

If you’re looking to expand or replace your appliances, and have a tight space, then absolutely. Do note that it is larger than a standard microwave, in width, height and depth, but having so many elements combined in one sleek, user-friendly and brilliantly performing machine, rather than scattered around the kitchen, with multiple plugs, makes it worth the investment. It’s allowed me more prep space, head space and unlocked many culinary possibilities - all with the ease of use of a standard microwave.
