Tried & Tested
On trial: Waitrose Easter eggs
As Easter rolls around, the annual decision of which Easter egg to opt for takes centre stage again
Should you plump for the chic option, the (mildly) heathier egg or even the vegan one? And don’t get us started on what to get the kids.
Thankfully, help is at hand and our team happily put down our pens and picked up the chocolate to put a selection of the Waitrose Easter collection to the test…
Waitrose No.1 3 Duo Chocolate Easter Eggs, £7
Alanna Freeman, Content Editor
Don’t be fooled by their actual-egg size - this petite trio will end your hunt for a decadent-but-not-overwhelming Easter treat. Each one combines the perfect amount of gorgeously gooey salted caramel and nut-rich praline, encased in a smooth, gold-speckled milk chocolate shell. Sweet (but not too sweet) and certainly luxurious, they’ll make any chocolate lover crack a smile.
Waitrose Sam on Toast, £6
Nina, 8 and Olive, 5
Sam was tested by two chocolate-lovers Nina, aged 8 and Olive, aged 5. After an initial quarrel about him actually being ‘too cute to eat’ he was quickly devoured. The two solid Belgian milk chocolate slices have a delicious yet subtle butterscotch flavour, with a white chocolate Sunny Side Sam face, which is guaranteed to raise a smile. A super cute alternative to the more traditional egg-shaped easter gift and perfect to share.
The Chocolate Croissant Easter Egg, £15
Lewis Chong, Senior Copywriter
This super chic Chocolate Croissant is a grown-up Easter treat that looks so delicious you’ll want to save it for yourself rather than gifting. The croissant is actually hollow white chocolate with crunchy little bits of biscuit (which is actually feuilletine wafer and caramel pieces) decorated with milk chocolate and milk chocolate vermicelli. It’s huge, so perfect for sharing and along with all Waitrose & Partners Easter eggs it’s made using Fairtrade sourced cocoa.
The Cracking Pistachio Easter Egg, £17
Olivia Adams, Senior Editor
This pistachio egg has plenty of pizazz and I love that unlike real pistachios, you don’t have to work to eat it. Made with Fairtrade cocoa, the blonde chocolate shell easily opens to reveal a pistachio flavoured egg packed with chopped pistachio nuts. This unique egg went viral on TikTok last year, and now it’s back and better – there are more crunchy, salty pistachio nibs to balance the sweetness of the shell. Delicious and two eggs for the price of one!
Milk Chocolate Flat Easter Egg, £12
Rebecca Knight, Copywriter
Rich, creamy and with a satisfying crunch, this Easter egg may be two dimensional in shape but it’s five dimensional in flavour. Every bite is a treat thanks to the more than generous scattering of feuilletine wafer, fleur de sel, cocoa nibs and shimmering chocolate flakes. If you’re trying not to over-indulge, this egg delivers a symphony of flavour in every precious bite – you’ll be wholly satisfied. The chocolate is bold, yet smooth and the hints of saltiness pique the flavour profile before settling into a fine balance of sweet and salt. Absolutely delicious.
Dark Chocolate & Nut Flat Florentine Easter, £12
Emma Ledger, Contributing Editor
This egg’s eye-catching flat design makes it a great gift to wow a loved one with - or for chocoholics (like me) to treat themselves to. The shiny chocolate is super smooth, striking the right balance between dark and creamy. It's generously decorated with flaked almonds, caramelised pecan nuts and caramelised hazelnuts, with a bonus hollow half mini egg. The satisfying snap it makes every time you break off another chunk only adds to how moreish it is. One for grown-ups to enjoy once the kids are in bed.
Mummy Meegz Chuckie Egg, £4.50
Wil Law, Social Media Manager
It’s been around 10 years since I’ve tasted a ‘real’ cream egg, so it was a real treat to try this vegan take on the classic. The eggs were almost exactly the same as I’d remembered - that crisp chocolate outer-shell, slightly thicker in places (the best bits in my opinion) and gooey fondant centre whose standalone flavour is hard to pinpoint. For me, it tasted of sweet comfort and the experience was very nostalgic. Fellow vegans - I’d highly recommend these.
