Product information

Switch between candid portraits, relaxed snapshots and vivid filming all without changing your lens. Fast, smooth focus and an adaptable focal length that balances angle and range make this lens an essential addition to any Canon user’s arsenal.

  • Never be without your EOS. The compact pancake EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is very thin, so you’ll always be able to take your DSLR with you.
  • Fast, accurate autofocusing ensures pin-sharp images even in tough conditions. The Movie Servo AFM with STM uses stepping-motor technology for smooth, quiet autofocus when filming on compatible Canon DSLRs.
  • An f/2.8–22 aperture range provides control over depth of field, giving you the freedom to restrict or extend focus as required. A fast maximum aperture allows hand-held shooting in low light without using flash.
  • A versatile 40mm focal length is great for travel. Tackle everything from portraits to landscape and street photography. Great image quality right across the frame, thanks to an aspherical lens design and Super Spectra coatings.
  • For use with EF mount Canon DSLR cameras

Q & As

Rated 4 out of 5 by 3 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Less Is More I have heard this lens described as cute, tiny and a toy. I suppose it is cute and it is very small but it is not a toy. The build quality is very good. It will add only 130g to the weight of your camera. The focus is fast enough for most situations and a 40mm 2.8 lens is a good alternative to a kit or 50mm lens. This is a real multipurpose lens and produces sharp, nicely saturated images. The 40mm STM is a basic no nonsense lens and is a genuine bargain at this price. 19 December 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Not as quiet as expected It is a nice lense but bought this expecting it to be quiet when recording movies but you can hear the auto focus motor and also not as quick at focusing as I expected. But on the plus side does make the camera even more compact when used with this lense. But for me this one is going to spend most of its time in its box :-( 09 December 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Amazing and Fun! This lens is great for when you want a light and quick lens to take out with you when doing street photography. You hardly notice there is a lens on the camera it is so light and because it is a panckae lens you dont feel as if you are intruding when taking photographs out and about. The lens is great fun and gets you back to the basics in photography allowing easy experimentation with different photographic techniques. I wopuld recommend this lens to anybody starting out in photography or those looking for a quiet and light lens for use away from a studio. 05 August 2014
